Ram Gopal Varma recalls directing her on ‘Kshanam Kshanam’ amid unveiling of Sridevi's biography ‘The Empress': 'Working with her was like staying at a 7-star hotel, you were spoilt for life'

Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has offered insightful reflections on the legendary actress Sridevi, particularly in light of the forthcoming biography, ‘The Empress.’ Varma’s contribution to this much-anticipated book includes a dedicated chapter, which he reveals has been lauded as one of the best in the collection. His candid interview sheds light on his unique experience directing Sridevi in the film ‘Kshanam Kshanam’ and his enduring fascination with her unparalleled acting prowess.

The biography, titled ‘The Empress,’ written by Dhiraj U. Kumarr, was officially announced by Priyanka Chopra on what would have been Sridevi’s 60th birth anniversary. Varma confirmed his participation, contributing a chapter that delves into his personal and professional observations of the iconic star. While initially unaware of the book’s specific title, he acknowledged its aptness, remarking, “I didn’t know it was called ‘Empress.’ Is it ‘Empress’? Okay, I guess she was that. Although I’d have preferred Screen Queen, she was that, the others all came after her.” Despite being complimented on his chapter, Varma humorously expressed skepticism, suggesting that such praise might be extended to all contributors.

Varma’s collaboration with Sridevi was limited to a single film, ‘Kshanam Kshanam,’ yet this solitary experience left an indelible mark. He vividly recalls her remarkable versatility and depth, stating, “I got to direct her only once. It was more than enough proof what she could do. For every scene she had 15-20 interpretations and expressions. Working with her was like staying at a 7-star hotel. You were spoilt for life.” Even years after her passing, the director admits to still being awestruck by her performances, particularly citing the famous Charlie Chaplin sequence in ‘Mr. India.’ “It is impossible to understand the craft behind something like that. She is phenomenal beyond any actor I’ve directed,” he confessed.

He recounted his initial meeting with Sridevi at her Chennai residence, a moment that left him utterly captivated. He had arrived to discuss a potential project, and her fleeting appearances as she prepared for a flight created a lasting impression. “Every time she came into the room, it was like a sudden rush of fresh invigorating breeze,” he nostalgically shared. The profound impact she had on him is evident in his wistful wish: “I want her to come back to earth again. Just once. So that humanity would know she really existed.”

When questioned about revisiting Sridevi’s films or reflecting on her on her birth anniversary, Varma offered a surprisingly pragmatic perspective. He asserted, “No! I don’t think of dead people at all. Once they are gone, they are out of my life. I would rather focus on my own life than think of the dead.” This frankness underscores his focus on the present and his current artistic endeavors.

‘The Empress’ is designed as a comprehensive tribute, compiling anecdotes and insights from various individuals who intersected with Sridevi’s life and career. Varma’s contribution, offering a director’s perspective, adds a crucial dimension to understanding her acting process and profound impact on Indian cinema. His recollections of ‘Kshanam Kshanam’ and his profound admiration for her talent undoubtedly enrich the biography’s portrayal of the late actress.

Beyond discussing Sridevi, Varma also highlighted his current directorial focus: ‘Police Company.’ This action-crime drama, starring Harshvardhan Rane, is described by Varma as a story intricately linked to the Mumbai underworld and the proliferation of various gangs during a tumultuous period. He has provocatively tagged ‘Police Company’ with the tagline ‘It Is More Dangerous Than D Company,’ hinting at a compelling narrative exploring the consequences when powerful institutions begin to operate like commercial entities.
