Record-Breaking Litter: Rescued Cane Corso Surprises Animal Shelter with 14 Puppies

A five-year-old Cane Corso has made history at a South Yorkshire animal shelter, delivering the largest litter of puppies ever recorded at the facility.

The dog, named Kila, was taken into the care of the RSPCA’s Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch on July 1 following a rescue operation in Doncaster prompted by welfare concerns. While staff initially prepared the dog for a routine neutering procedure, a pre-operative veterinary check revealed a significant surprise: Kila was heavily pregnant.

Just six days after her arrival at the centre, Kila gave birth to 14 healthy puppies. The unexpected arrival has presented a logistical challenge for the charity, which was already providing care for 10 other puppies at the time.

Chloe Gee, a staff member at the branch, described the situation as overwhelming but heartwarming. “We’d be really grateful to anyone who can help as we nurture these gorgeous families,” Gee stated, noting that the sheer volume of animals currently in their care is putting a strain on the shelter’s resources.

As the team works to support Kila and her growing brood, they are already looking ahead to the future. The puppies are expected to be ready for rehoming starting September 28. The charity is encouraging prospective pet owners to reach out and register their interest in providing a permanent home for the Cane Corso breed, which is known for its loyalty and protective nature.
