Rishabh Pant Faces Injury Scare, But Expected to Return for Day 2 of Colombo Test
COLOMBO – The Indian cricket team endured a tense moment during the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka on Sunday, as dynamic wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt after sustaining a painful blow to his left arm.
The incident occurred during the high-intensity third session of play. Facing a lethal short-pitched delivery from Sri Lankan fast bowler Lahiru Kumara, Pant attempted a pull shot behind square. However, he failed to make a clean connection, and the ball struck his left arm with significant force, leaving the left-hander visibly distressed.
The Indian team physiotherapist immediately rushed onto the field to provide medical attention. Initial efforts included applying an ice pack to the affected area, followed by taping. However, as the discomfort persisted, the tape was removed, and Pant made the difficult decision to leave the field. He walked back to the pavilion in the 58th over, having scored three runs off 15 deliveries. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja subsequently stepped in to join Devdutt Padikkal at the crease.
Optimism for Day 2
While the injury caused immediate concern among fans and the team management, Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak offered a reassuring update during the post-day press conference.
“I think he will be fine to continue tomorrow,” Kotak stated, indicating that the team expects Pant to return to the batting lineup as the match progresses.
Padikkal Leads the Charge
Despite the disruption caused by Pant’s departure and the fall of early wickets, India managed to end the day in a solid position, finishing at 300/5 at stumps.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly Devdutt Padikkal, who showcased remarkable resilience to notch up an impressive 117 off 168 balls. This century marks the rising star’s second in as many Test matches. Although Padikkal was handed two lives early in his innings—being dropped at zero and one—he settled in to anchor the Indian effort with a display of powerful drives and full-blooded pulls.
As play concludes for the day, Dhruv Jurel remains unbeaten on 7, accompanied by debutant Saransh Jain, who is not out on 4. The focus for Day 2 will now shift to whether Pant can recover sufficiently to resume his innings and if India can build on their solid foundation to post a commanding first-innings total.
