A substantial drone assault during the early hours of August 16th ignited a colossal warehouse, owned by Wildberries, Russia’s premier online retailer, in the Moscow region. This devastating incident resulted in a towering plume of smoke visible across the Koledino area, with harrowing footage illustrating the rapid spread of flames throughout the facility. Governor Andrei Vorobyov of the Moscow region characterized this event as one of the most significant drone attacks to strike the region in recent memory, claiming at least six lives across Russia, according to reports from the Associated Press.
The Wildberries complex in Koledino, situated approximately 45 kilometers south of Moscow, was a primary target. Visual evidence showed immense smoke billowing from the warehouse and flames consuming large sections of the property. Additionally, a second logistics hub in Domodedovo, located near a major Moscow airport, sustained damage, as reported by Reuters. Wildberries confirmed the fire at its logistics facility via a Telegram post, stating that staff had been safely evacuated beforehand in adherence to established safety protocols. The company assured customers that “Logistics operations have been rerouted; the acceptance of deliveries and the dispatch of orders are being handled at other facilities.”
Social media platforms were inundated with striking visuals depicting the immense conflagration, with colossal flames engulfing the warehouse area and dense black smoke ascending dramatically into the sky. This particular Wildberries facility, spanning an impressive 250,000 square meters, was one of the retailer’s two largest warehouses. The other, located in Elektrostal, had reportedly been destroyed in a previous strike in July.
This drone strike was not an isolated incident but rather a component of a much broader overnight drone offensive. Russia’s Defence Ministry asserted that its forces had intercepted 822 Ukrainian drones across the country. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin further added that over 600 drones were detected heading towards the capital. Governor Andrei indicated that air-defense and electronic-warfare systems had successfully “shot down or neutralized 187 UAVs” across several districts, including Domodedovo and Podolsk.
Wildberries, often likened to “Russia’s Amazon,” has increasingly become a focal point in Ukraine’s drone operations. Ukrainian authorities have alleged that the company’s logistics facilities are being utilized for the transfer of military-related equipment, including drone components and other materiel. These accusations have been consistently denied by Russia, as reported by the BBC. As Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries connects merchants with consumers, managing storage, payment processing, and deliveries. Founded in 2004 and led by entrepreneur Tatyana Kim, the company has seen several of its logistics sites targeted in recent weeks, contributing to mounting disruptions for one of Russia’s most significant e-commerce networks. The ongoing conflict has highlighted the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to such attacks, underscoring the broader impact on both military and civilian logistics.
