Comedian Samay Raina Faces Backlash Over Controversial ‘Bihari vs. Kashmiri Pandit’ Roast

New Delhi: Comedian Samay Raina, a prominent figure in India’s burgeoning stand-up circuit, has once again found himself at the center of a heated national debate. The comedian, known for his edgy brand of dark humor, has drawn sharp condemnation from politicians and community activists following the latest episode of his popular show, India’s Got Latent.

The controversy stems from an exchange between Raina and guest Sharon Verma. During the segment, the duo engaged in a “roast” that quickly devolved into jabs regarding their respective regional and ethnic backgrounds. While Verma directed wisecracks toward Raina’s Kashmiri Pandit heritage, the comedian retaliated with jokes targeting her roots in Bihar.

Political Outrage and Allegations of “Publicity Seeking”

The banter, intended for comedic effect, has been labeled “insensitive” and “derogatory” by political leaders.

BJP MLA Ram Kadam slammed the performance, characterizing it as a calculated attempt to secure free publicity. “There are certain forces in society that deliberately make controversial statements simply to gain publicity. We need to understand that the deities of Sanatan Hinduism and Kashmiri Pandits cannot be treated as subjects of ridicule,” Kadam stated, as reported by the news agency IANS.

Bihar Minister Mithilesh Tiwari echoed these sentiments, condemning the remarks as harmful to the national fabric. “Any derogatory remark against any citizen of our country is unacceptable. We are people who dream of an Akhand Bharat, and for us, the king and the commoner are equal,” Tiwari remarked.

Community Leaders Express Disappointment

The incident has particularly resonated within the Kashmiri Pandit community, with activists labeling the trivialization of their historical displacement as “unfortunate.”

“It is very unfortunate that the man who himself is a victim of ethnic cleansing and genocide trivializes the ethnic cleansing of his community,” said activist Amit Raina. “He has no business mocking people who have been living in exile.” Ashwani Bhat, another activist, added that denigrating a community of genocide survivors for “cheap laughter” and digital engagement is unacceptable.

A History of Legal Hurdles

This is not the first time the comedian has been mired in controversy. In 2024, Raina was forced to pause production of India’s Got Latent following a crass remark made by guest podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia. That incident led to multiple police complaints and a formal investigation by the Maharashtra police’s cyber cell.

The Supreme Court had previously intervened in the matter, reprimanding the comedian before ultimately moving to cancel the FIRs registered against him earlier this month. Despite these past warnings, the host continues to push boundaries; in a recent event attended by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Raina joked, “Maharashtra cyber and I go way back,” a remark that drew laughter from the audience despite the underlying tension.

As the new latent row continues to unfold, the incident has reignited the broader conversation about the limits of dark comedy and the ethical responsibilities of digital creators when navigating sensitive cultural and regional identities.
