Sarfaraz Khan Steps into Test Arena as Sudharsan Recovers from Injury
Bengaluru, India – In a significant development for India’s upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, Sarfaraz Khan has been named as the replacement for the injured Sai Sudharsan. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Sunday that Sudharsan has been ruled out due to a right toe stress reaction, prompting the selectors to opt for the experienced Mumbai batter.
Sudharsan has been undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru. While he has shown promising progress, he is yet to make a full recovery. “The BCCI Medical Team is closely monitoring his progress,” the board stated, indicating a cautious approach to his return to competitive cricket.
The Men’s Selection Committee, after careful deliberation, brought in Sarfaraz, who had emerged as a leading contender for the spot. TimesofIndia.com had previously reported that the selectors were weighing options between Sarfaraz and Shaik Rasheed. Ultimately, Sarfaraz’s extensive experience at the highest level of cricket is understood to have been the decisive factor in his inclusion.
Sarfaraz Khan, a prolific run-scorer in domestic cricket, already boasts a respectable Test career for India. He has featured in six Tests, accumulating 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including three crucial half-centuries. His addition provides India with a valuable middle-order option, bolstering the squad as they gear up for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
India’s updated squad for the Test series against Sri Lanka now stands as follows:
Shubman Gill (Captain), KL Rahul (Vice-Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Devdutt Padikkal, Saransh Jain, Auqib Nabi, Sarfaraz Khan
The squad announcement comes on the heels of India’s successful three-day warm-up game against the Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo, which concluded on Sunday. India showcased a strong performance, chasing down a target of 207 runs in 45 overs to secure a six-wicket victory.
The warm-up match offered key players valuable match practice and an opportunity to fine-tune their form. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill laid a solid foundation with a commanding 105-run opening partnership. Jaiswal, shaking off a first-innings duck, impressed with a quickfire 61 off just 46 balls before retiring. Gill, returning to competitive action after recovering from a finger injury, contributed a composed 44 runs.
The middle order also saw contributions from Rishabh Pant (28 runs) and Dhruv Jurel (17 runs). The chase was dramatically sealed by Mohammed Siraj, who unleashed a spectacular unbeaten 32 runs off a mere 15 balls, including three consecutive sixes, demonstrating his prowess with the bat.
In the first innings, India’s batting line-up had posted a formidable total of 357 for six declared, largely thanks to Devdutt Padikkal’s outstanding unbeaten 142 runs. He was well supported by Ravindra Jadeja (63 runs) and Manav Suthar (41 runs), who contributed significantly to the team’s strong total.
The warm-up fixture served as crucial preparation ahead of the opening Test, scheduled to commence in Galle on August 15. With Sai Sudharsan’s unfortunate absence, Sarfaraz Khan will now integrate into India’s rigorous preparations, aiming to secure his place and contribute to the team’s success in the series. His inclusion brings a sense of excitement and anticipation, as the team looks to finalize its optimal combination to challenge Sri Lanka on their home turf.
