One of Wake County’s largest employers said Thursday it cut hundreds of jobs across the company.
Cary-based software company SAS eliminated 300 positions throughout the company last week, a company spokesperson said. The company said the job cuts were “targeted changes” and that employees who were affected by the cuts would be allowed to apply for other open positions or “take advantage of transition.”
“These changes are intended to align SAS resources with our long-term strategic priorities as we continue to invest in key growth areas, including R&D, sales and cloud,” the spokesperson told WRAL News.
It is unclear how many of those jobs were based in the Triangle.
SAS was founded in the 1960s after eight universities, including North Carolina State University, came together to develop a statistical software package to analyze agricultural data. Since then, it has become one of the largest privately held software companies in the world.
SAS said that despite the job cuts, the company has hundreds of open positions worldwide.
“We are always focused on the best path forward for the business, aligning our resources with customer needs, strategic priorities and sustainable growth, so we will not speculate on any further changes,” A company spokesperson said.
