Sergio Garcia knows he took things too far at the 2026 Masters. Garcia reportedly received a code of conduct warning after damaging a tee box and breaking his driver after an errant tee shot Sunday.
Two days later, Garcia issued an apology for his actions, admitting they have “no place in our game.”

His full statement read:
“I want to apologize for my actions on Sunday at The Masters tournament. I respect and value everything National Golf Club and Augusta National Golf Club is to golf. I regret the way I acted and it has no place in our game. It doesn’t reflect the respect and appreciation I have for The Masters, the patrons, tournament officials and golf fans around the world.”
Garcia came under fire for overreacting to his tee shot on hole No. 2 on Sunday. After hitting the ball, Garcia almost immediately smashed the tee with his club, and then put a sizable divot in the tee box. Right after that, he hit his driver against a cooler, breaking it.
His actions resulted in Garcia reportedly receiving a code of conduct warning. When asked about the incident Sunday, Garcia said he was “not super proud of it,” though declined to recall the conversation he had with an Augusta National official about his outburst, telling a reporter, “I’m not going to tell you.”

Garcia turned in a less-than-stellar performance at the 2026 Masters. He shot eight-over for the event, finishing in 52nd place. It was, however, better than Garcia — who won the Masters in 2017 — has fared in recent years at Augusta. After finishing tied for 23rd at the 2022 Masters, he failed to make the cut at the next three prior to his 52nd-place finish Sunday.
