Former India captain and current president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Sourav Ganguly, has sought police intervention after a series of threatening letters, including explicit death threats directed at him and his wife, Dona Ganguly, prompted serious concern. The alarming development was reported by news agency PTI.

Ganguly filed a written complaint at the Thakurpukur Police Station in south Kolkata on Monday, following the receipt of two particularly menacing letters at his office. This move comes after months of receiving similar communications that were initially dismissed as non-serious.

Threatening Letters Received Over Six Months

According to the police complaint lodged by Ganguly’s manager, these unsettling letters have been arriving under Ganguly’s name for approximately six months. Initially, these communications were not given significant attention. However, the tone and content escalated dramatically with the two letters received on Monday.

These latest communications reportedly contained unambiguous threats to end the lives of both Sourav and Dona Ganguly, alongside explicit warnings of harm to individuals closely associated with them. This escalation in threats compelled the former cricketer’s team to officially involve law enforcement.

A senior police officer confirmed that an extensive investigation has been initiated to ascertain the sender’s identity and determine the underlying motive behind these grave threats. “We are taking the complaint seriously and have begun an investigation. We are examining the letters, their source and the courier trail to identify the person responsible,” the officer stated.

Police Track Courier Trail in Belgharia Link

The preliminary phase of the investigation has already yielded potential leads. Authorities suggest that the threatening letters might have been dispatched via a courier service, with a suspected sender located in Belgharia, a region within the North 24 Parganas district.

In a bid to close in on the culprit, police are meticulously scrutinizing the activity of a SIM card allegedly used by the sender. Furthermore, they have established contact with the courier agency involved to gather comprehensive details regarding the consignments. “We have spoken to the people from the courier service and tracked down one mobile number. We are trying to spot it,” the officer elaborated, indicating progress in their tracking efforts.

Police Examine Possible Motive and Sender Consistency

Kolkata Police are currently focused on determining whether all the threatening letters originated from the same individual. This crucial step will help establish a pattern and potentially narrow down their search for the perpetrator. Concurrently, investigators are working to uncover the motive that could drive such severe threats against a public figure of Ganguly’s stature.

The probe involves a detailed examination of the content of each letter, tracing their exact origins, and meticulously following the courier trails. The police are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to ensure the safety of Sourav Ganguly and his family, and to bring the person or persons responsible for these serious threats to justice.
