Spin Dominance Puts India in Commanding Position Against Sri Lanka
Galle, Sri Lanka – India has asserted its dominance in the first Test against Sri Lanka, securing a formidable 178-run first-innings lead on Day 3 after bowling out the hosts for 284. A masterclass in spin bowling from Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja, coupled with a crucial early breakthrough from Mohammed Siraj, kept the pressure firmly on Sri Lanka despite a courageous maiden international century from Sonal Dinusha.
The day began with Sri Lanka facing an uphill battle, and their struggles were compounded early on by the pace and movement of Mohammed Siraj. Siraj drew first blood, dismissing Nishan Fernando for a duck. Fernando, who had shown promise in a warm-up game, edged an away-swinging delivery straight to Devdutt Padikkal at first slip, leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 0/1.
However, it was the spin twins who truly dismantled the Sri Lankan batting lineup. Young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, making an instant impact, struck with his very first delivery. He found a faint outside edge from veteran Dinesh Chandimal, which was expertly snaffled by Rishabh Pant behind the stumps. Suthar continued to impress throughout the innings, demonstrating exceptional control and generating consistent turn while bowling at a brisk pace above 85 kmph. He finished with an excellent haul of 4/76, leading India’s bowling attack.
Sri Lanka attempted to rebuild through the partnership of Lahiru Udara and Kamindu Mendis. Mendis showcased his aggressive intent by pulling Prasidh Krishna for a six, while Udara used his pull and cut shots effectively to find boundaries against Suthar. However, Suthar eventually broke the resistance, enticing Udara into a loose shot that found the safe hands of Yashasvi Jaiswal at gully. Mendis’s promising innings also came to an unfortunate end when an uppish push against Kuldeep Yadav flew towards Shubman Gill, who completed a brilliant diving catch.
Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja then joined the party, adding to India’s growing wicket tally. He dismissed Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva for 21, getting an edge that was comfortably caught by Rahul at slip. Jadeja’s consistent line and length, coupled with his ability to extract turn, made him a constant threat, and he ended with figures of 3/57.
Despite the persistent efforts of Dinusha, who etched his name in the record books with a maiden international hundred, and Niroshan Dickwella, India remained firmly in control. The collective effort of the Indian bowlers, particularly the devastating spin combination of Suthar and Jadeja, ensured that any burgeoning partnerships were quickly curtailed.
With a substantial 178-run first-innings lead, India will now look to press home their advantage on Day 4 and set a challenging target for Sri Lanka to chase. The exceptional performance of the Indian bowlers has put them in a commanding position in this opening Test match.
