Bombay High Court Resolves Sonu Nigam’s Intellectual Property Dispute, Safeguarding Singer’s Identity
Mumbai, India – A high-profile legal battle centered on intellectual property rights and personal identity has been amicably resolved by the Bombay High Court. The dispute, initiated by renowned playback singer Sonu Nigam, against an individual sharing his name, Sonu Nigam Singh, concluded with a settlement where Singh agreed to cease unauthorized use of the singer’s identity and likeness across digital platforms.
Justice Madhav Jamdar formally recorded the settlement on August 13, following confirmation from legal representatives of both parties that an amicable resolution had been reached. The consent terms submitted by Nigam and Singh were accepted by the court as binding undertakings, effectively bringing an end to the commercial intellectual property suit.
Nigam had approached the High Court seeking robust protection for his personality and publicity rights. His petition sought a permanent injunction against Sonu Nigam Singh and any associated individuals or entities from utilizing the name "Sonu Nigam," as well as the singer’s image, likeness, or any other distinguishing attributes of his personality without explicit authorization.
The singer’s legal team argued that Singh’s use of similar identifiers and imagery on social media platforms created a significant risk of misleading the public. This could lead individuals to believe that Singh’s social media accounts, services, or activities were directly connected with, endorsed by, or even belonged to the celebrated singer. The petition further called for stringent restrictions on the re-creation, publication, uploading, circulation, and reproduction of any content deemed to be infringing upon Nigam’s rights.
The court noted that an ad-interim order, issued on July 11, 2025, had already put in place a restriction preventing Singh and anyone acting on his behalf from using the display name or account name "Sonu Nigam" across various social media platforms. Lawyers for both parties confirmed to the court that this initial order had been fully complied with.
The formal consent terms were signed by Saira Dawood Makani, Nigam’s power-of-attorney holder, and Sonu Nigam Singh himself. Makani was present in the courtroom, while Singh participated in the proceedings via video conferencing. Both individuals unequivocally confirmed that the dispute had been settled entirely in accordance with the agreed-upon terms.
"Various statements made in the Consent Terms are accepted as undertakings given to this Court," Justice Jamdar stated in his order, underscoring the legal weight and finality of the settlement. This resolution highlights the growing importance of protecting personality and intellectual property rights in the digital age, particularly for public figures whose identities are integral to their professional brand and livelihood.
