Tablets Emerge as Serious Contenders in India’s Computing Market Amid Rising Laptop Prices

NEW DELHI – The traditional boundary between the tablet and the laptop is blurring as Indian consumers, feeling the pinch of rising notebook prices, pivot toward high-performance tablets for their everyday computing needs. Armed with expansive screens, professional-grade memory, and versatile keyboard attachments, these devices are increasingly positioning themselves as viable alternatives for productivity, education, and entertainment.

A Shift Toward Premium Performance

Data from the research agency CMR reveals a significant transformation in consumer behavior. During the January-March 2026 quarter, India’s tablet market surged by 37% year-on-year. Notably, the premium segment—devices priced above Rs 20,000—now dominates the market, accounting for 86% of all shipments and recording a robust 92% growth.

The trend toward "PC-like" power is evident in the hardware specifications being prioritized by buyers. Tablets equipped with 6GB of RAM saw a 284% jump in demand, while high-end variants featuring 12GB of RAM skyrocketed by 835% year-on-year.

"The distinction between a tablet and a laptop will continue to narrow significantly over the next two-to-three years," a Xiaomi spokesperson noted, suggesting that while specialized professional workloads will remain tethered to traditional PCs, tablets are set to capture a larger share of daily computing tasks.

Bigger Screens Rule the Market

Screen real estate has become a primary driver for the current wave of tablet demand, with devices smaller than 10 inches losing favor. Counterpoint Research data highlights that shipments of tablets with screens 13 inches or larger surged by 338% in the first quarter of 2026. Conversely, tablets with screens under 10 inches saw a sharp decline of 52%.

This evolution in hardware is intentional. Manufacturers are catering to a demographic that values portability and a "touch-first" experience without sacrificing productivity. HP, for instance, is leveraging products like its OmniPad to target students, educators, and small business owners who require the mobility of a tablet paired with the functionality of a detachable keyboard.

"PC penetration in India remains at around 17%," said Vineet Gehani, senior director of personal systems at HP India. "As households continue to prioritize education and invest in technology for work and productivity, the opportunity lies in expanding access to computing through a broader range of form factors."

The Economic Catalyst

The shift is partly driven by macroeconomic factors in the hardware sector. According to Anshika Jain, a senior analyst at Counterpoint, both laptop and tablet prices saw double-digit growth in the first half of 2026. However, notebook prices increased more aggressively during the recent memory-price cycle, prompting price-sensitive consumers to opt for high-spec tablets as a cost-effective alternative to entry-level laptops.

Co-existence, Not Replacement

Despite the tablet’s rapid growth, industry experts warn against labeling this a "wholesale replacement" of the laptop. The surge is currently concentrated in specific areas: online education, content consumption, and light productivity tasks.

For heavy-duty content creation, software development, and complex computing workloads, the traditional laptop remains the preferred choice. Ultimately, the market is moving toward a hybrid environment where consumers select devices based on specific use cases rather than a single "one-size-fits-all" computing model.

While the first quarter showed strong momentum, the market outlook remains nuanced. Analysts at CMR project a modest 10–12% decline for the tablet market for the full calendar year, even as the push for high-performance, large-screen devices continues to reshape the landscape of personal computing in India.
