Teenage Hero Joins Dramatic Rescue After Car Plunges into Tree on A19

A young engineering apprentice has been hailed for his bravery after he and two other passersby pulled two people from a burning vehicle following a violent collision on the A19.

The incident, which occurred around 4:00 PM on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31, saw a white Ford Focus leave the carriageway near Kirklevington and strike a tree with significant force.

The 18-year-old witness, who was driving to North Yorkshire for a walk with his girlfriend at the time, described the terrifying moment the car ahead of him went airborne before crashing.

“We were driving along and we saw this car in front just leave the road, get air time and hit a tree,” the teenager recounted. “It set on fire straight away—I just pulled over in a lay-by and thought, ‘Oh my god, this is bad’.”

Upon exiting his vehicle, the teen discovered that two other men had also pulled over to assist. Working against the clock as the vehicle became engulfed in flames, the trio managed to extract the driver and his passenger, moving them to the safety of a nearby grass verge.

The teenager noted the intensity of the moment, particularly when he spotted a car seat in the back of the wreckage. “There was a baby seat in the back too, so I was looking around for a baby, but thankfully there wasn’t one in the car,” he said.

Emergency services, including four fire engines from Middlesbrough, Stockton, Thornaby, and Coulby, arrived shortly after the rescue. Paramedics treated the pair at the scene before transporting them to James Cook University Hospital. Reports indicate that the male driver sustained head injuries, while his female passenger suffered several fractures and was left severely distressed by the ordeal.

Recalling the immediate aftermath of the [A19 crash], the young apprentice admitted to being in a state of shock as he watched the emergency crews work. “The next thing I know, the emergency services were all there—police, fire, and ambulance. I just hope they’re both okay and recover from their injuries.”

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service confirmed that they dispatched a large contingent of resources to the scene, including two ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, and a clinical team leader. Cleveland Fire Brigade managed to extinguish the blaze by 4:44 PM.

The heroic efforts of the three passersby have been credited with preventing a much worse outcome, as the vehicle was entirely overtaken by flames just minutes after the occupants were removed. Cleveland Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
