Tilak Varma Leads South Zone to Duleep Trophy Final with Clinical Win Over North Zone
BENGALURU: South Zone secured their berth in the final of the prestigious Duleep Trophy after a commanding seven-wicket victory over North Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 2 on Wednesday. Captain Tilak Varma anchored the chase with a composed unbeaten half-century to steer his side to a comprehensive win.
Nidheesh Dismantles North Zone
Resuming the final day on 256/7 with a slender 139-run lead, North Zone looked to push their total toward safety. However, they were swiftly curtailed by the bowling brilliance of MD Nidheesh.
Despite a resilient 60-run partnership between Anshul Kamboj and Nishant Sindhu, the momentum shifted once Kamboj was dismissed by Nidheesh for 36. Nidheesh proved to be the tormentor-in-chief for the North Zone tail, cleaning up Gurnoor Brar and Arshdeep Singh to complete a stellar five-wicket haul. Nidheesh finished with figures of 5/56, effectively bundling out North Zone for 297 and setting a target of 181 for South Zone to chase.
A Measured Chase to Victory
South Zone’s pursuit began with purpose. Openers Ricky Bhui and Narayan Jagadeesan provided a solid foundation, adding 64 runs. Bhui played with attacking intent, racing to 42 off just 53 balls before falling to Gurnoor Brar. Following the quick dismissal of Shaik Rasheed, the game briefly tightened, but Jagadeesan and skipper Tilak Varma held firm.
After the lunch break, the duo continued to consolidate. Though Jagadeesan was eventually stumped off Abid Mushtaq for 43, the result was never in doubt. Tilak Varma and R. Smaran stitched together an unbeaten 79-run partnership, dismantling the North Zone bowling attack with ease. Varma fittingly sealed the victory with a boundary, a shot that also brought up his patient 51 not out.
The Foundation of a Captain’s Knock
While the final day’s performance was clinical, the cornerstone of South Zone’s triumph was laid much earlier. In the first innings, Varma rescued his side from a precarious 80/5, scoring a match-defining unbeaten 116. His 175-run stand with Shreyas Gopal (87) proved pivotal, granting South Zone a 117-run lead that effectively decided the trajectory of the match.
Looking Ahead
South Zone will now turn their attention to the summit clash, where they are set to face East Zone. Having defeated Central Zone by four wickets in their respective semifinal, East Zone will head into the final match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, starting September 6, with significant momentum.
