Toys “R” Us Continues Brick-and-Mortar Comeback with New California Location

The retail landscape is witnessing a wave of nostalgia as Toys “R” Us prepares to return to the San Fernando Valley. The iconic toy retailer has announced plans to open a new location at the Northridge Fashion Center in California, marking another milestone in the brand’s ambitious strategy to re-establish a physical presence across the United States.

While an official opening date for the Northridge store has yet to be finalized, the “Coming Soon” listing on the mall’s website has already sparked excitement among local residents and long-time fans. The expansion comes as the retailer pushes to rebuild the footprint it lost following its high-profile bankruptcy and the subsequent closure of all U.S. stores in 2018.

A Legacy Reimagined

The news has reignited calls from customers for the chain to lean into its heritage. On social media, fans have expressed a desire for a “retro” shopping experience, with many suggesting that the stores should dedicate sections to classic toys from decades past to appeal to adult shoppers looking to reconnect with their childhood memories.

This resurgence is part of a broader, multi-year recovery effort. After WHP Global acquired a controlling stake in the company in 2021, the firm launched a series of initiatives to bring the brand back to the forefront of retail. This included a strategic partnership with Macy’s to host branded shops within hundreds of department stores—a move that saw Macy’s report toy sales surging 15 times higher than pre-partnership levels in early 2022.

From Airports to Malls: The “Air, Land, and Sea” Strategy

Beyond traditional shopping centers, WHP Global has implemented an unconventional expansion plan dubbed “air, land, and sea.” This strategy has seen the brand venture into high-traffic, non-traditional locations, including the launch of a flagship store at the American Dream mall in New Jersey, a retail outlet at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, and plans to integrate the brand into cruise ship operations.

“The Toys ‘R’ Us brand is growing fast, and our expansion into air, land and sea is a testament to the brand’s strength,” WHP Global Chairman and CEO Yehuda Shmidman noted during the announcement of the expansion phase. At the time of that announcement, the brand had already increased its global footprint by more than 50%, boasting over 1,400 stores and e-commerce sites across 31 countries.

The Path Forward

Today, the Toys “R” Us website lists more than 30 standalone and flagship locations across the United States, representing a significant turnaround for a company that once buckled under $5 billion in debt.

As the retailer prepares for its arrival in Northridge, the industry is watching closely to see if this renewed focus on physical retail will sustain the current momentum. For many, however, the return of the brand is about more than just numbers—it is about restoring a fixture of the American retail experience that has held a place in the hearts of generations.

Representatives for Toys “R” Us and the Northridge Fashion Center have not yet provided further comment on the upcoming store.
