Trump Loyalist Harmeet Dhillon Exits DOJ Post in Sudden Leadership Shakeup

Harmeet Dhillon, a prominent conservative attorney and longtime ally of President Donald Trump, has resigned from her position leading the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. The announcement was made Thursday by Attorney General Todd Blanche, marking the first high-ranking departure from the Trump administration following the midterm elections.

“Today, I accepted the resignation of Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who led the Civil Rights Division with conviction the past 18 months,” Blanche stated in a social media post. “She has defended the civil liberties of every American and enforced the law without fear or favor. The Department is grateful for her dedicated public service, and we wish her every success in her future endeavors.”

While the administration framed the exit as a natural transition, sources indicate the resignation was long expected. President Trump had reportedly grown frustrated with the division’s performance, specifically citing a series of embarrassing courtroom losses during Dhillon’s tenure.

During her 18 months in the role, Dhillon oversaw a radical shift in the division’s priorities, focusing heavily on advancing the President’s political agenda. Her office took aim at diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, sought to restrict participation in women’s sports, and rolled back consent agreements with numerous police departments. Additionally, the division faced repeated defeats in court after filing lawsuits against states to demand access to sensitive voter rolls.

Dhillon’s tenure was also marked by massive internal turnover. An estimated 75% of the division’s career attorneys departed during her leadership, a mass exodus that drew sharp criticism from legal advocacy groups.

Kristen Clarke, NAACP general counsel and a former assistant attorney general for civil rights under the Biden administration, condemned Dhillon’s performance in a scathing statement. “She abdicated her responsibility to enforce our nation’s federal civil rights laws and destroyed the crown jewel of the Justice Department,” Clarke said. “Instead of protecting the civil rights of all Americans, she abandoned cases, purged the work force and weaponized the Division to target institutions to achieve illegitimate, partisan goals.”

Dhillon, however, defended her record in a post on X, thanking the President for the opportunity and highlighting her efforts to dismantle DEI and fight for conservative priorities.

Before her government appointment, Dhillon served as one of President Trump’s personal attorneys, representing him during the Jan. 6 committee hearings and assisting in his unsuccessful legal challenges to the 2020 election results. Her move to the DOJ followed a high-profile, unsuccessful challenge to Ronna McDaniel for the RNC chairmanship in 2023.

It remains unclear who the administration will tap to fill the vacancy as the President looks to stabilize his cabinet in the wake of the midterm results.
