Two Police Officers Among Seven Dead Following Tragic A66 Collision

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a formal investigation after a high-speed pursuit ended in a catastrophic collision, claiming the lives of seven people, including two serving police officers.

The victims have been identified as Pc Matthew Blades, 37, and Pc Tom Clough, 38. The pair were on duty in a marked Cleveland Police vehicle in the early hours of Saturday morning when they were struck by a Volkswagen Passat that was travelling the wrong way down the A66 near South Bank, Middlesbrough.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:39 a.m. following reports that Cleveland Police officers had identified a suspicious vehicle. A pursuit was initiated, which tragically concluded when the fleeing car collided head-on with the police patrol vehicle.

A "Devastating Day" for the Force

Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller expressed the profound grief felt by the department and the wider community.

"This is an incredibly sad day for Cleveland," Chief Constable Fuller said in a statement. "These were brave officers protecting our communities and serving our residents who didn’t return home to their families at the end of their shift."

The impact of the crash was severe, drawing a massive emergency response. The North East Ambulance Service dispatched 14 units to the scene, including specialist paramedics, a hazardous area response team, and a medical doctor from the Great North Air Ambulance Service. Despite the rapid arrival of emergency personnel, authorities confirmed that multiple people, including the two officers, died at the scene.

Official Investigation Underway

Due to the involvement of a police vehicle in the fatality, the incident has been subject to a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The watchdog has now opened an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the fatal crash.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reacted to the news, stating he was "devastated" by the scale of the tragedy.

Cleveland Police have cordoned off the A66, with the road expected to remain closed for an extended period to allow for a full forensic investigation. Officials are currently working to identify all other victims involved in the collision and have urged the public to respect the privacy of the families affected.

"This is a quickly-evolving incident," a spokesperson for the force noted. "We ask that members of the public avoid speculation while we work to piece together exactly what happened in these final, tragic moments."

Authorities have requested that motorists avoid the area and use alternative routes while the site is processed.
