Two tourists have been stabbed near Greece’s ancient Acropolis.

A man and a woman, both Greek Americans, were attacked with a knife near the entrance of the Acropolis Museum in Athens, on Tuesday morning.

The building lies at the foot of Acropolis hill, which is where the nearly 2,500-year-old Parthenon temple is located.

The man suffered serious wounds to his arm while the woman suffered light injuries to her leg.

Police arrested the attacker at the scene. It’s understood he was suffering from psychological problems.

Footage shown on Greek news outlets show what appears to be blood on the pavements.

The Acropolis hill attracts millions of tourists every year. In 2025, 4.6million people visited the site.

While attacks in Greece are rare, in April, an 89-year-old man allegedly opened fire with a shotgun in a social security office and a courthouse in the centre of the capital.

Four people were injured.

There is no warning against travelling to Greece in place for British holidaymakers. However, earlier this month the Foreign Office updated its travel advice after ‘several attacks’.

Current advice states terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Greece after several attacks involving explosives and automatic weapons against Greek institutions, shopping malls, banks, media offices, diplomatic premises, and the police.

It comes after three improvised devices targeting Greek political figures killed one person and injured four others on July 1.

There is no indication the knife attack at the Acropolis is linked to any ongoing threat.
