Indian Tyre Exports Surge 16% in Q1, Defying Global Economic Headwinds
CHENNAI: India’s domestic tyre industry has demonstrated remarkable resilience, recording a significant 16% year-on-year growth in exports during the first quarter of the 2027 fiscal year. According to data released by the Ministry of Commerce and cited by the Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association (ATMA), total export value reached ₹7,700 crore during the period, despite a challenging backdrop of geopolitical instability and volatile supply chains.
The robust performance in the opening quarter builds upon a record-breaking FY26, during which the sector achieved an unprecedented export valuation of ₹27,312 crore. A key contributor to this quarter’s success was the Passenger Car Radial (PCR) segment, which saw a notable 21% surge in value.
“Growth in tyre exports during the first quarter represents a strong start to the new financial year and reflects the growing acceptance of Indian-made tyres in global markets,” said Arun Mammen, Chairman of ATMA.
Regional Drivers and Market Penetration
Data indicates that the European market acted as a primary engine for this growth. Exports to the region climbed by 25% to reach ₹3,003 crore, representing nearly 40% of India’s total tyre exports. Meanwhile, the United States maintained its status as the largest single-country export destination for Indian manufacturers, accounting for 16% of the total export share.
Currently, Indian-manufactured tyres are exported to over 170 countries, solidifying the nation’s reputation as a reliable player in the global automotive supply chain.
Navigating Global Challenges
The growth is particularly significant given the current climate of “global headwinds.” Manufacturers have had to contend with elevated input costs and rising logistics expenses, which have hampered trade sectors globally. However, industry experts suggest that Indian manufacturers have effectively leveraged quality improvements and competitive pricing to sustain demand.
ATMA has emphasized that to maintain this upward trajectory, the industry requires continued government support. The association noted that enhanced market access through strategic trade agreements and the continuation of supportive export policies will be critical in cementing India’s long-term position as a preeminent global hub for tyre manufacturing and distribution.
As the industry looks ahead, the focus remains on navigating fluctuating raw material costs while expanding its footprint in both emerging and established economies.
