'Unfair': Canada suspends trade talks with US, PM Carney says will match tariffs 'dollar for dollar'

Canada Halts Trade Negotiations with U.S., Vows Retaliatory Tariffs

OTTAWA — In a dramatic escalation of North American trade tensions, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially suspended negotiations with the United States. The move comes after Ottawa rejected last-minute revisions to proposed trade terms, labeling the American demands as "unfair" and "uneconomic."

The breakdown in talks arrives just as the U.S. prepares to impose a 50 percent tariff on approximately C$28 billion worth of Canadian goods, effective at midnight. In response, Prime Minister Carney has vowed that Canada will match these levies "dollar for dollar."

A Deal Unraveled

The sudden collapse of discussions marks a sharp reversal from the optimistic tone set only a day earlier by U.S. President Donald Trump, who had expressed confidence in reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.

"We have to take care of our farmers," President Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews on the eve of the suspension. "The deal with Canada is moving along and we should be able to have a deal."

However, Prime Minister Carney painted a different picture, citing a shift in Washington’s stance at the eleventh hour. In a formal statement, Carney announced that he had directed his negotiating team to return to Ottawa immediately.

"In recent weeks, we made important progress toward improving Canada’s position… however, that progress has not been enough to meet our objectives for Canadians," Carney said. "Last-minute changes in the US proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal."

Accusations of "Backtracking"

The U.S. side was quick to shift blame, with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer claiming that Canada was the party responsible for the impasse.

"Tonight, Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week," Greer said during a press call. "Despite the US offer to Canada to receive the best treatment of any major exporter to our market, new demands and walk-backs of other commitments by Canada have upended the careful balance reached in the past days."

Canada’s Pivot Strategy

As the trade standoff deepens, Prime Minister Carney emphasized that Canada is prepared to weather the economic fallout by accelerating its long-term strategy of reducing dependency on the American market.

Carney highlighted that Canada currently holds free-trade agreements providing preferential access to 1.5 billion consumers, a figure he expects to double by the end of the year. Furthermore, the Canadian government intends to bolster its domestic support systems, building upon the C$25 billion in aid already provided to Canadian workers and businesses over the past 18 months.

As both nations brace for the impact of the impending trade talks breakdown, the collapse represents a significant turning point in the historically stable economic relationship between the two neighbors. The focus now shifts to how both the Canadian and American industries will adjust to the new, highly protectionist reality set to begin at midnight.
