From Screen to Page: How Viraf Patell is Empowering a New Generation of Writers
For many in the entertainment industry, transitioning from being in front of the camera to behind the script is a daunting challenge. For actor and writer Viraf Patell, this journey has been defined by a commitment to mastery, resilience, and, most importantly, creating pathways for others.
The Craft of Storytelling
Patell’s foray into professional writing began in 2008, but he notes that his perspective on the craft was fundamentally transformed during the pandemic. He credits veteran actor Boman Irani’s digital masterclasses as a turning point in his career. “The biggest struggle for anyone trying to become a screenwriter is the taleem—the craft knowledge,” Patell explains. “Those 1,500-plus hours of world-class education have been priceless.”
His dedication to the craft quickly yielded results. Patell earned his first writing credit on the acclaimed film Kutch Express. When the pandemic stalled production, Patell—who also acted in the film—proposed a significant rework of the script. The gamble paid off: the film went on to win prestigious accolades at the National Awards, including Best Feature Film promoting National, Social, and Environmental values, alongside wins for Best Actress and Best Costumes.
“Not everything you write gets made or wins awards,” Patell reflects. “But I have stories to tell, and I am at it.”
Bridging the Access Gap
Beyond his personal success, the industry veteran became acutely aware of a systemic issue facing burgeoning talent: a lack of direct access to decision-makers. This realization led him to become the Creative Director of Frame Your Idea, a pivotal initiative at FICCI Frames designed to bridge the gap between creative writers and producers.
“The objective is to create dignified, structured access for writers,” Patell notes. By providing a professional bridge to the industry, the initiative has already facilitated remarkable success stories.
The impact is tangible. Journalist Nihit Bhave utilized the platform to connect with filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, eventually landing a spot in the writers’ room for the hit series Sacred Games and penning the film Choked. Similarly, Abhishek Bandekar was discovered through the platform by Colour Yellow Productions, leading to his film Tu Ya Main, directed by Bejoy Nambiar.
A Mission for the Future
Patell, whose diverse acting credits include appearances in Pathaan, Maharaj, and Made in India – The Titan Story, views the initiative as a long-term commitment to the industry’s health.
“When we started this journey, we needed just one life to change to give ourselves a reason to continue. Now we have far more than that,” he says. With Frame Your Idea set to return in September, Patell remains focused on ensuring that the next generation of storytellers doesn’t have to struggle for the opportunity to be heard.
