India’s ONGC Unveils Ambitious $12 Billion Push to Unlock Deepwater Energy Reserves

NEW DELHI – In a strategic move to bolster domestic energy security and reverse production declines, India’s state-owned energy giant, the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), has announced a massive capital expenditure plan. The company intends to invest one trillion rupees (approximately $12 billion) over the next five years to aggressively explore its local deepwater and ultradeep water fields.

The announcement was made by ONGC chairperson AK Singh during a press conference on Monday, marking a pivotal shift in the company’s exploration strategy. As part of this comprehensive initiative, ONGC has committed to drilling 87 deepwater and ultradeep water wells by March 2031.

Targeting Untapped Potential

Singh emphasized that India possesses significant, untapped oil and gas reserves buried within its deepwater blocks. While these resources have long been identified, advancements in offshore extraction technology have only recently made them commercially and technically viable for large-scale development.

“India has huge untapped reserves of oil and gas in deepwater blocks, and there are now technologies available to tap those resources,” Singh stated, highlighting the modernization of the company’s operational approach.

Addressing Output Challenges

The aggressive investment plan comes at a critical time for the nation’s flagship explorer. For ONGC, the pursuit of these frontier offshore assets is more than a growth strategy; it is a necessity. The company is currently facing a steady decline in its legacy oil and gas output, and management believes that major new discoveries in these deepwater regions are essential to stabilizing production levels and meeting the country’s rising energy demands.

The massive capital allocation reflects the Indian government’s broader push to reduce the nation’s heavy reliance on energy imports. By focusing on high-risk, high-reward deepwater exploration, ONGC aims to revitalize its portfolio and strengthen its role as the backbone of India’s upstream sector.

Industry analysts suggest that the success of this multi-year drilling campaign could fundamentally reshape the country’s energy landscape. For more detailed insights into the corporation’s roadmap, you can read the full report on the ONGC expansion strategy.
