15. Blair Murray 4
The Scarlets full-back had a difficult afternoon but did cover the backfield well at times.
But Wales’ defence was simply not good enough.
14. Louis Rees-Zammit 5
The ball did not come his way during the first 40 minutes but he chased well, putting Springboks 10 Vusi Moyo under pressure.
Decent under the high ball at times but not enough opportunity with ball in hand.
13. Max Llewellyn 3
It was always going to be difficult behind a beaten pack, but he struggled with South Africa’s attack as they crossed the gain-line at will.
He only made 2 tackles and one carry. He needs to offer a lot more.
12. Ben Thomas 5
He had one strong carry in the first-half and some nice touches from the Cardiff centre.
11. Ellis Mee 5
He started well under the high ball, winning possession in the air and put in an excellent try-saving tackle on Cobus Wiese.
There were some mistakes but he was one of Wales’ better players and was unlucky not to score a try out wide early in the second-half.
10. Dan Edwards 4
The Ospreys playmaker was on a hiding to nothing given how the Wales pack got knocked around.
His kicking out of hand was decent but he is far too passive in defence.
9. Tomos Williams 4
He kicked well out of hand in the first-half but could not make any attacking impact playing behind such an underpowered pack.
8. Aaron Wainwright 5
The Wales No 8 got his side out of trouble on a number of occasions in the first-half off the back of a retreating scrum.
He was Wales’ top carrier (nine) and one of their better players, but he did not play the second-half due to injury.
7. Jac Morgan 5
The Gloucester-bound openside will be disappointed he missed a one-on-one tackle on Jasper Wiese which cost his side a try.
But he fought valiantly and ended up as the game’s top tackler with 22
6. Alex Mann 4
He could have done better to help Tomos Williams off the back of a scrum when Cobus Reinach scored South Africa’s second try.
He put his body on the line to make 16 tackles but could not live with South Africa’s physicality and got smashed backwards on too many occasions.
5. Teddy Williams 3
The Cardiff lock struggled to cope with the physicality of the Springboks pack and failed to impose himself.
He was decent at the lineout but needed to offer more.
4. Adam Beard 3
Like most of his teammates, he struggled with the physicality of the Springboks as the Wales pack got obliterated.
He did not offer enough.
3. Dillon Lewis 3
This was a very tough afternoon at the office for the experienced Dragons prop.
Lewis suffered a torrid time at the set-piece as South Africa stuffed Wales at the scrum. He also gave away a handful of penalties around the park.
2. Dewi Lake 5
Solid at the lineout but part of a front-row that struggled badly at scrum time.
But he worked hard, making five carries and six tackles before he got replaced at half-time.
1. Rhys Carre 3
The Wales prop got shoved backwards at a rate of knots at scrum time and struggled to get into the game.
He missed a tackle on Jasper Wiese for the first Springboks try and spilled the ball forward when Wales were in a strong attacking position.
Carre was replaced at half-time.
Replacements
16. Ryan Elias 6
He improved Wales’ physicality and made one thunderous try-saving tackle. But he overthrew an attacking lineout.
17. Nicky Smith 5
Smith improved the scrum slightly but they remained on the back foot.
18. Ben Warren 3
He struggled at the scrum and got yellow-carded for a high tackle on Marco van Staden.
19. Freddie Thomas 5
He got through a lot of work and was an improvement on the starters.
20. Tommy Reffell – N/A
He was not on for long enough.
21. James Botham 5
Botham got through a lot of work and is one of the only Wales players who held his own physically. The Cardiff backrower should have started this game on the blindside.
22. Reuben Morgan-Williams N/A
Not on for long enough.
23. Joe Hawkins 4
Hawkins struggled to make an impact and lost the ball in contact on more than one occasion.
