Harmanpreet, who impressively converted two penalty corners, emphasized that the immediate objective was to secure the full three points, and he stressed the team’s commitment to rectify the mistakes that allowed Wales to score late in the match.
“We executed our game plan effectively,” Harmanpreet remarked after the encounter. “Our primary focus was to generate opportunities and consistently score goals throughout the tournament. The individual accolades or goal scorers are secondary; the paramount goal is to find the back of the net. This collective mindset guided our performance.” He further added, “Initiating the tournament with a strong victory was crucial. Our 3-1 win, securing three points, represents a positive outcome.”
India had established a commanding 3-0 lead by the 43rd minute, with Sanjay opening the scoring in the eighth minute, followed by Harmanpreet’s strikes in the 11th and 43rd minutes. However, Wales managed to reduce the deficit in the 56th minute after a chaotic sequence in front of the Indian goal, denying the former champions a clean sheet. Harmanpreet openly admitted that this late concession serves as a valuable learning experience for India as they progress deeper into the tournament. “While we gave our best, credit must also be given to Wales for their performance. This was merely our initial match, and we are determined to eliminate such errors in subsequent fixtures,” the Indian captain stated. The Welsh goal itself was shrouded in controversy, arising from a lengthy deliberation after an unusual incident where the referee inadvertently dropped his whistle, missing a crucial part of the play. Ultimately, a third umpire review confirmed Sam Welsh’s goal, narrowing the score to 1-3.
All three of India’s goals originated from penalty corners, with both Sanjay and Harmanpreet capitalizing on their drag-flick opportunities. Despite coach Craig Fulton’s ongoing emphasis on enhancing India’s field-goal conversion rate, Harmanpreet reiterated that the origin of the goals was less significant than the final tally. “Our forward line exhibited excellent performance, earning numerous penalty corners. Regardless of whether they score field goals or create penalty corners, goals are vital for the team’s success,” he explained. The captain also expressed profound confidence in the team’s thorough preparation and current form, especially after a somewhat inconsistent lead-up to the World Cup. “At present, the team is singularly focused on the World Cup, and we are in excellent form, meticulously prepared, and confident of achieving a podium finish,” he affirmed. India will now shift their attention to their next challenge, facing England in their second Pool D match on Monday, with the contest scheduled to commence at 6:30 PM IST.
