Following a high-level review meeting in Mumbai on Thursday, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia shut down rumors regarding Sharma’s tenure in the ODI format, dismissing calls for his exit as unwarranted. With the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon, discussions surrounding succession planning have intensified, but Saikia believes the focus should remain on performance rather than age-related speculation.
A Robust Defense
Speaking to the press, Saikia expressed frustration with the ongoing narrative surrounding the 39-year-old’s position in the squad.
“He is playing superbly in all the matches. So, what more do you want? In the last match, he scored 138 runs. So, why is there speculation? I don’t want to give fodder to the speculations,” Saikia stated firmly.
This latest endorsement follows a consistent line from the BCCI hierarchy. As far back as mid-July, Saikia had clarified that the veteran was not near the end of his international career, stating, “Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team, and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things.”

The criticism reached a fever pitch during India’s recent ODI tour of England, where pundits and media outlets suggested that the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground might host the final appearance of the former captain.
Rohit, who retired from Test cricket in 2025 and T20Is in 2024, responded to the skepticism in his trademark fashion. He smashed a brilliant 138 at Lord’s—becoming the oldest Indian player to score an ODI century at the historic venue. While the result did not go India’s way, the innings served as a stark reminder of his enduring class and ability to anchor the team.
When asked previously about the persistent “noise” surrounding his career, Rohit remained unfazed. “If there’s no noise, there’s no fun. My job is inside; their job is outside,” he remarked. “What matters is what I do on the field. I want to try and contribute to the success of the team.”
