Caithness Councillor Willie Mackay has resigned from Highland Council amid the severe public backlash over the taxi licence rapist row.

The development was confirmed by a source within the council this evening that the long-serving Wick and East Caithness councillor left the local authority.

It follows hot on the heels of news that Cllr Duncan Macpherson had also resigned from the committee.

Yesterday we confirmed that Cllr Mackay had quit his role on the licensing committee along with the chairman Sean Kennedy and John Grafton.

The resignation was triggered by a fierce public backlash to the committee continuing the operators licence for convicted rapist David Brown.

Brown (50) of Croy near Inverness, was jailed for six years and nine months in May following his attack on an 18-year-old female passenger in December 2023.

The response from the public and bodies like Rape Crisis Scotland and Inverness Women’s Aid was highly critical of the councillors.

Those councillors who have spoken out deny allegations of misogyny, insist their intention was not to penalise Brown’s wife, they also say there is no risk at all to the public.
