Xbox Eyes New Hardware Strategy Under ‘Project Helix’ Amidst Exclusivity Uncertainty

While Microsoft’s gaming division maintained a high-profile presence at Gamescom 2026, showcasing upcoming titles like Fable on the show floor, the company remained notably guarded regarding the future of its hardware and the much-debated exclusivity status of its flagship franchises.

In a rare interview during the convention, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma shed light on the company’s internal roadmap, confirming that Microsoft is deep in development on what it calls Project Helix.

A New ‘Family of Devices’

“We’ve been hard at work on a great next generation and a great family of devices for Helix, and we’ll share more soon,” Sharma told the BBC. The language suggests a shift toward a broader ecosystem rather than a singular, traditional console release.

Sharma emphasized that the next generation of Xbox must prioritize “affordability and efficiency” in response to a global crisis in hardware and component manufacturing. This “family of devices” framing has reignited industry speculation: will Microsoft continue the budget-friendly path established by the Xbox Series S, or is it pivoting toward a dedicated, architecture-integrated handheld device to compete with the rumored portable efforts from Sony and existing Windows-based handhelds?

Beyond hardware form factors, Sharma hinted at a seamless bridge between platforms, noting, “We’ve talked about being able to not only play your console games, but also play your PC games on your console.”

The Exclusivity Question: Where does The Elder Scrolls 6 stand?

The most pressing question for the Xbox community remains the fate of The Elder Scrolls 6. When pressed by the BBC on whether the highly anticipated RPG would remain an exclusive, Sharma offered a cryptic response.

“Look, I think we are one of the largest publishers in the world. We are increasingly going to be one of the largest platforms in the world. Every platform needs some form of exclusive experiences and content,” Sharma stated, balancing the need for platform-defining hits with the financial realities of the gaming market. However, when explicitly asked if The Elder Scrolls 6 was a priority for exclusivity, she replied only with: “It’s a beautiful game.”

This lack of clarity comes at a time when Xbox’s multiplatform strategy is facing its first major tests. While Microsoft previously suggested that keeping its biggest IPs exclusive was economically viable, the rising costs of triple-A development are making the reach of platforms like the PlayStation 5 increasingly attractive.

Signs of a Strategic Pivot

The uncertainty is further complicated by recent reports regarding Forza Horizon 6. While there were early expectations for the title to launch on PlayStation 5 this year, industry insiders indicate that the port has been scrubbed from the 2026 release schedule and pushed into 2027.

The delay of such a high-performing title on a rival platform suggests a potential “tug-of-war” within Microsoft. As the leadership team evaluates whether to double down on hardware-centric exclusivity or embrace a broader, platform-agnostic publishing model, fans are left waiting for answers. For now, despite the buzz at Gamescom, Microsoft appears content to keep its most critical strategic decisions firmly behind closed doors.
