The renowned actor Yash recently reflected on the much-discussed 2018 box-office showdown between his film, KGF, and Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero. The popular Kannada superstar emphasized that there was no intention to enter into a direct competition with Shah Rukh Khan, whom he holds in high regard as a senior and an iconic figure in the industry.
During an appearance on the talk show "Aap Ki Adalat," Yash was directly questioned about the strategic decision to release KGF on the very same day as Zero. The interviewer probed whether this timing was influenced by his admiration for Shah Rukh Khan, even suggesting it might have been a response to not having had the opportunity to meet the Bollywood star previously. Yash, however, dismissed the notion with a laugh, clarifying that he never perceived KGF as being on a comparable scale to Zero. He humbly stated, “Our film was a small one and Shah Rukh sir’s film was huge, so we released on the same day.”
Both films premiered on December 21, 2018. At the time, Zero arrived with considerable anticipation, positioned as one of the most significant Bollywood releases of the year. In contrast, KGF was a Kannada-language production that unexpectedly captivated audiences across India, transforming into a massive pan-Indian sensation. Starring Yash as the formidable Rocky, KGF proved to be a pivotal moment in his acting career. Its phenomenal success not only established him as a prominent pan-India star but also paved the way for its highly successful sequel, KGF: Chapter 2.
The theatrical trajectories of the two films diverged significantly. KGF ultimately emerged as a substantial commercial triumph, reportedly grossing around ₹250 crore globally, a figure highlighted during the interview. Zero, on the other hand, experienced a more subdued performance at the box office, achieving a worldwide collection of approximately ₹100 crore. Despite this stark difference in commercial outcomes, Yash maintained that box-office figures do not diminish his profound respect for Shah Rukh Khan’s standing in the film industry.
Yash spoke about Shah Rukh Khan with evident admiration, stressing that he would never allow the success of one film to inflate his ego or make him believe he has surpassed his seniors. He eloquently expressed his philosophy: “He is a superstar and the day I think that my seniors, unse main bada hoon, uss din meri dukaan band” (He is a superstar, and the day I think I am bigger than my seniors, that day my career is over). This statement underscores his humility and enduring respect for established figures in the industry.
Currently, Yash is preparing for his next significant release, Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, this film features a stellar ensemble cast including Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Kiara Advani, and Tara Sutaria in pivotal roles. Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups is slated for a theatrical release on August 28. Furthermore, Yash is also involved in one of the most ambitious projects of his career, Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari. In this two-part epic, Yash will portray the complex character of Ravana, alongside Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita. Beyond his acting role, Yash is also contributing to the project as a producer through his own production banner. The first installment of Ramayana is scheduled for a Diwali 2026 release, with the second part expected to follow at a later date. This slate of upcoming projects highlights his diverse engagements in the entertainment industry.
