NCERT Elevates to Deemed University Status, Poised for Enhanced Research and Global Collaboration
NEW DELHI – The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), India’s venerable national resource institution for school education, has officially been granted the prestigious status of an "Institution Deemed to be University." This significant development, confirmed by the Ministry of Education, marks a pivotal moment in NCERT’s long-standing dedication to advancing educational research and pedagogy in the country.
The decision to confer deemed university status was the culmination of a rigorous evaluation process undertaken by the University Grants Commission (UGC). An expert committee, constituted under the provisions of the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2023, meticulously examined NCERT’s comprehensive application.
According to an official declaration from the Ministry of Education, NCERT, New Delhi, was formally recognized as an Institution Deemed to be University on March 30, 2026, under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956. This crucial update was shared by Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, in a written response to a query in the Lok Sabha on August 10, underscoring the government’s commitment to strengthening educational institutions.
UGC Expert Committee Recommended NCERT’s Application
The Ministry of Education further detailed that the UGC’s expert committee, after an exhaustive and holistic assessment of NCERT’s capabilities, infrastructure, and academic contributions, unanimously recommended the granting of "Institution Deemed to be University" status. Following this expert advice, the Ministry promptly accepted the UGC’s recommendation and issued the necessary notification, formalizing NCERT’s elevated standing.
With this new designation, NCERT has been explicitly directed to initiate concrete steps towards launching comprehensive research programs, alongside a suite of doctoral and other innovative academic programs.
