Veteran actor Satyajeet Puri recently shed light on a tumultuous period in Indian cinema history, recounting how a major political controversy led to an unprecedented public boycott of Amitabh Bachchan, severely impacting his 1987 film, ‘Kaun Jeeta Kaun Haara’. Puri detailed how public sentiment turned so hostile against the iconic actor that audiences not only shunned his films but even resorted to defacing movie posters with black paint.

Amitabh Bachchan Joins the Project After Being Impressed

In a candid video shared on his social media, Satyajeet Puri reminisced about the unexpected way Amitabh Bachchan came to be associated with ‘Kaun Jeeta Kaun Haara’. “Amit Ji saw the film and liked it,” Puri recalled, describing Bachchan’s initial reaction. “He said, what role can I play in this film? Your film is already complete.” It was Bachchan himself who proposed a solution: “He said, you become the narrator in this film. You narrate the entire story of this film.”

To accommodate the superstar, a special narrative device was crafted. Puri elaborated, “So, a situation was made, where Amit Ji is an actor and his car breaks down, and he narrates the entire film. Amit Ji came, Amit Ji did the entire shooting, his entire portion was shot, and the film was released.”

Puri admitted his excitement at the time, believing Bachchan’s involvement would guarantee success. “Here, I was very happy, that now Amit Ji is in our film, the opening of the film will be good, people will come and watch, the film is good,” he shared, his optimism palpable in the memory.

Bofors Controversy Sours Public Sentiment

However, fate, as Puri described it, had a harsh twist in store. The landscape dramatically shifted with the eruption of the infamous Bofors controversy. “But what I had told you earlier, fate, at that time, something happened, that the story of Bofors came out, and people became anti Amit Ji,” Puri revealed. The backlash was intense and widespread. “They became so anti that they stopped watching Amit Ji’s film,” he recounted, highlighting the severity of public outrage.

‘Kaun Jeeta Kaun Haara’ Posters Blacked Out

This public hostility directly impacted ‘Kaun Jeeta Kaun Haara’ upon its release. “And when this film was released, people completely banned it from their side. They didn’t watch it. There was no interest to watch it,” Puri stated. The boycott extended beyond mere absenteeism from theatres. “Even the posters of our film, people blacked them out.” The consequence for the film was devastating. “And that film, such a good film, such a good story, it didn’t work at all, it flopped,” he lamented.

Reflecting on the entire ordeal, Puri attributed the film’s failure to an external factor beyond creative control: sheer bad luck. “Like I told you, film industry, 99% is luck, and 1% again luck. So that wasn’t in my fate, that film wasn’t in my fate,” he mused. Despite the unfortunate turn of events, Puri acknowledged the unique collaboration with Bachchan. “But yes, in that film, I didn’t work with Amit Ji, but together, we were in that film,” he concluded, emphasizing their shared presence in the project, albeit under unforeseen circumstances.
