Delhi Capitals Cricketer Abishek Porel Arrested in Rape Case Following High Court Order
Kolkata, India – Abishek Porel, the promising wicketkeeper-batter for Bengal and the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), was arrested on Tuesday by Bengal Police in connection with a rape case. The arrest follows a formal complaint filed by a medical student, an official quoted by PTI confirmed.
Porel was taken into custody in Hooghly and subsequently underwent questioning before his formal arrest. The 23-year-old cricketer was then sent for a medical examination and later produced before the Chinsurah Court as part of the legal proceedings.
The case originates from a complaint lodged at Mogra Police Station by a woman who alleges that Porel established a physical relationship with her under the promise of marriage. The complaint further includes serious allegations of criminal intimidation and the recording of intimate moments without consent. It is crucial to note that these allegations have not yet been established in court and remain subject to ongoing investigation.
Arrest Follows Calcutta High Court Order
This significant development comes weeks after the Calcutta High Court issued a directive to Bengal Police to apprehend Porel in connection with the aforementioned case. In an order dated July 14, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya explicitly instructed police to continue their efforts to locate and arrest Porel, alongside another accused individual.
Furthermore, the court’s order mandated the seizure of electronic devices belonging to the accused to prevent the potential dissemination of alleged private material linked to the complainant. Police had previously informed the court that a pen drive had already been seized and dispatched for forensic examination.
The complainant had initially approached the High Court, citing alleged police inaction in the matter and further claiming that Porel had threatened to make private photographs public. According to the filed complaint, the woman first came into contact with Porel in 2023, and their relationship purportedly evolved to include discussions about marriage involving both families.
Among the detailed allegations, the complainant claims she was assaulted and confined during an incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026. She further alleges that she was denied food and subsequently required medical attention. These are grave allegations contained within the complaint and have yet to be substantiated through evidence in a court of law.
Porel’s Cricket Career Now Overshadowed
Abishek Porel has been a notable figure in Bengal’s domestic cricket circuit and has gained national recognition through his participation with the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. A left-handed wicketkeeper-batter, Porel made his first-class debut for Bengal during the 2021-22 season, a performance that subsequently earned him call-ups to the India A squad.
He joined the Delhi Capitals setup in 2023, establishing himself as a part of the franchise’s IPL squad in recent seasons. This legal entanglement now casts a significant shadow over the young cricketer’s burgeoning career. The unfolding investigation and subsequent court proceedings are poised to be pivotal in determining his professional future.
The complainant’s allegations against Porel encompass serious charges, including rape, criminal intimidation, and other offences. Porel has, in prior statements, denied these allegations and indicated his intention to provide a detailed response following the conclusion of the police inquiry. With his arrest now officially confirmed, the case enters a new and critical phase of the legal process. It is important to reiterate that Porel currently remains an accused, and any determination of guilt will be made exclusively through the due judicial process.
