NEW DELHI – The Union Agriculture Ministry has launched a significant initiative to bolster agricultural education and foster the next generation of agri-innovators: the National Scholarship Portal (NSP)-Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. This groundbreaking platform has already disbursed scholarships and fellowships totaling an impressive Rs 21.35 crore to over 6,000 deserving students, signaling a new era of streamlined financial support for agriculture students across the nation.
Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan officially unveiled the NSP-DBT system at ICAR-IARI, Pusa. The core objective of this new system is to ensure the timely and transparent transfer of scholarship amounts directly to students’ bank accounts through DBT, thereby eliminating delays and allowing beneficiaries to focus more intently on their academic pursuits. Monthly payments are a key feature, designed to provide consistent financial assistance.
Chouhan Emphasizes Practicality in Agricultural Education
During the launch event, Minister Chouhan delivered a compelling address, underscoring the critical need for a more robust and practical approach to agricultural education. He stressed that while classroom learning provides foundational knowledge, it cannot singularly equip students to become successful farmers, scientists, or agricultural entrepreneurs. Practical training, he asserted, is paramount.
"Examination, admission and payment – all must happen on time; that is the real test of any system," Chouhan stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to efficiency and student welfare. He actively encouraged students to contribute their suggestions for further refining agricultural education and training programs, fostering a collaborative environment for improvement. The Minister also urged young minds to look beyond traditional employment avenues and actively engage in innovation, research, and the burgeoning start-up ecosystem within the agricultural sector.
NSP-DBT: A Gateway to Seamless Scholarship Payments
The NSP-DBT system is meticulously designed to ensure faster, more transparent, and seamless scholarship distribution. Under this new framework, eligible students can apply through the National Scholarship Portal after completing a One-Time Registration (OTR).
For the upcoming 2026-27 academic year, the NSP portal became active on June 1, 2026. Students pursuing Post-Matric and Higher Education scholarships have until October 31, 2026, to submit their applications. Pre-Matric scholarship applications, on the other hand, have a deadline of August 31, 2026. The initial monthly DBT cycle for successful applicants is anticipated to commence in December 2026, following institute-level verification by November 15, 2026, and district/state-level verification by November 30, 2026.
