Pakistan’s Olympic javelin champion, Arshad Nadeem, has made a strategic decision to forgo the upcoming Lausanne Diamond League meet this month. This move comes as the elite athlete shifts his undivided attention towards rigorous preparation for his next major international competitions, prominently featuring the highly anticipated Asian Games in Japan.
Confirming the development, Nadeem’s coach, Salman Butt, stated that the javelin thrower is currently engaged in intensive training sessions in Lahore. Awaiting the finalization of his visa, Nadeem is poised to embark on a crucial training camp in South Africa. There, he is scheduled to spend approximately two weeks in Potchefstroom, honing his skills under the expert guidance of his personal coach, Terseus Liebenberg, alongside local trainers.
“He has decided against competing in the Diamond League meet this month as he wants to be ready for the Asian Games,” Butt revealed, as quoted by news agency PTI, underscoring the athlete’s clear prioritization of long-term objectives over immediate competitive engagements.
Arshad Nadeem Chooses Training Over Lausanne Meet
The Lausanne Diamond League, slated for August 21, promised a star-studded lineup of global javelin talent, including India’s Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Germany’s Julian Weber, and Grenada’s Anderson Peters. However, the 28-year-old Pakistani powerhouse has opted to bypass this prestigious event. Instead, he intends to leverage the South Africa camp to significantly enhance his preparation and fine-tune his technique.
Potchefstroom holds significant strategic importance for Nadeem. It has served as a familiar and successful training base in the past, preceding his triumphant campaigns at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2024 Olympics, where he secured gold medals at both events. This return to a tried-and-tested training environment highlights his commitment to optimal performance.
This calculated decision follows a challenging period for the Pakistani star. He has recently grappled with underwhelming performances at two international competitions, attracting considerable scrutiny. Most notably, he faced criticism after a disappointing ninth-place finish in the recent Commonwealth Games final held in Glasgow, a result that starkly contrasted with his previous achievements.

In the Glasgow event, Nadeem unexpectedly failed to secure a spot among the top eight competitors.
