Indian Railways Forges Stronger Ties with Bangladesh: First Advanced LHB Coach Rake Unveiled

KAPURTHALA, INDIA – [Date of Publication] – A significant stride in international railway cooperation was marked on Wednesday as the Indian Railways‘ Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala successfully rolled out the inaugural rake of 19 advanced Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) broad gauge passenger coaches destined for Bangladesh Railway. This milestone represents a deepening partnership and a commitment to enhancing cross-border connectivity and passenger experience.

The unveiling of this state-of-the-art rake is the latest chapter in a burgeoning collaboration between RCF and Bangladesh Railway, which commenced in 2015-16 with the successful delivery of 120 LHB broad gauge coaches. Following that initial triumph, Bangladesh Railway, via RITES, placed a substantial order in 2024 for the manufacture and supply of an additional 200 broad gauge passenger coaches across seven distinct variants, solidifying the strategic alliance between the two nations.

The rake consists of three AC sleeper coaches, three AC chair cars, 11 Non-AC chair cars and two power cars.

The newly manufactured coaches are not merely an expansion of existing stock; they represent a significant leap forward in design, safety, and passenger comfort, meticulously tailored to meet the unique operational requirements of Bangladesh Railway. The Ministry of Railways highlighted that these coaches feature several "first-of-their-kind modifications and design enhancements" specifically developed for LHB coaches.

The unveiled rake comprises a balanced configuration to cater to diverse passenger needs: three AC sleeper coaches, three AC chair cars, eleven Non-AC chair cars, and two dedicated power cars.

Innovation and Passenger-Centric Design at the Forefront

Passenger experience has been a primary focus in the design of these new coaches. They are equipped with specially engineered reclining seats, complete with stainless steel armrests and footrests, offering passengers multiple comfortable positions during their journey.

Beyond seating, a comprehensive suite of passenger-focused amenities has been integrated, including:

  • Fans in air-conditioned coaches: A practical addition to enhance comfort, particularly during warmer periods.
  • Integrated CCTV surveillance system: Bolstering security and passenger safety.
  • Passenger alarm system: Providing an immediate means for assistance.
  • Partially openable windows: Offering flexibility and fresh air.
  • Dedicated Baby Care Room: A thoughtful provision for families traveling with infants.
  • Prayer Room: Catering to the spiritual needs of passengers.

Enhanced Durability and Uncompromising Safety

One of the most striking adaptations for Bangladesh’s operational landscape is the structural reinforcement of the coach roofs. This crucial modification enables the coaches to safely withstand the additional load imposed by passengers traveling on the roof during periods of heavy traffic, a common occurrence in certain regions during peak travel times.

Technological advancements are also evident in the coaches’ safety features. A key development is the adoption of a crashworthy design, meticulously engineered to comply with the stringent European Standard EN 15227. Achieving this benchmark necessitated a complete redesign of the coach body shell, significantly improving crash performance and elevating overall passenger safety to an international standard.

Furthermore, the electrical system has been meticulously customised to operate on 415 V, a departure from the conventional 750 V system typically employed in coaches run by Indian Railways. This bespoke electrical configuration ensures seamless integration with Bangladesh Railway’s existing infrastructure and operational parameters.

This rollout not only underscores India’s prowess in advanced railway manufacturing but also signifies a robust commitment to fostering regional connectivity and supporting the development of neighbouring nations’ infrastructure. The collaboration between RCF and Bangladesh Railway serves as a model for international partnerships, driving progress and enhancing the quality of public transport for millions.
