Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy Demand Halts Potential Gujarat Titans Return Amidst MI Uncertainty

Mumbai: Hardik Pandya‘s efforts to navigate away from the Mumbai Indians franchise have encountered a significant hurdle. Sources indicate that the prominent India all-rounder explored a return to the Gujarat Titans, the team he famously led to an IPL title in 2022 and the finals in 2023. However, these negotiations reportedly stalled due to Pandya’s insistence on reclaiming the captaincy role.

The Gujarat Titans, while open to the prospect of welcoming back the 32-year-old star, were unwilling to displace Shubman Gill, who has now established himself as India’s Test and ODI captain, from the leadership position. A source close to the developments revealed, “Which team wouldn’t want Hardik? But his captaincy condition killed the deal.”

Pandya’s tenure at Gujarat Titans marked a pivotal period in his career, where he not only revitalised his international prospects but also cemented his reputation as a formidable leader. Nevertheless, insiders suggest that while GT recognised his valuable experience, their expectation was for him to return as a seasoned player, not as the team’s captain.

Meanwhile, Pandya’s future at Mumbai Indians remains shrouded in uncertainty following yet another underwhelming season. The five-time champions finished a disappointing ninth in IPL 2026, extending their title drought to six years. Pandya’s personal performance also saw modest returns, accumulating 206 runs at an average of 22.88 and claiming four wickets in 10 matches, with back spasms limiting his appearances.

Since taking over the MI captaincy from Rohit Sharma in 2024, Pandya has endured a tumultuous period. The team finished last in 2024, showed a brief recovery to reach the playoffs in 2025, but then regressed significantly to ninth place this year. The controversial decision to replace the much-loved Rohit Sharma with Hardik also drew considerable backlash and hostility from a segment of the franchise’s dedicated fan base.

Further adding to the speculation, MI batting coach Kieron Pollard offered a cautious outlook on Hardik’s continued captaincy after the team’s dismal performance in May. Pollard, when questioned about Pandya’s leadership, stated, “Yes, it might not have gone as well as he would have wanted, what we would have wanted, but I wouldn’t question anything at this time. Twelve months ago, we finished third. Now again, we finished ninth. Those are the inconsistencies we will have to address. We will sit and talk, lick our wounds and hopefully come back stronger in 12 months’ time. He was trying. We all were trying. We tried each and everything to give the best opportunity for him to lead the franchise and do well.”

Hardik’s Comeback Likely vs Afghanistan

For the immediate future, Pandya’s primary focus is on regaining full fitness. He has been undergoing intensive training at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, diligently bowling up to 10 overs and engaging in extensive batting practice in the nets. Sources close to the situation suggest that Pandya is anticipated to be available for India’s upcoming home T20I series against Afghanistan, which is scheduled to commence in New Delhi on September 13th.
