Pooja Bedi breaks silence on Aamir Khan link-up rumours, recalls how he eased tension before ‘passionate love-making’ scene: ‘Are you kidding me?’

Mansoor Khan’s directorial masterpiece, ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar,’ upon its release, transcended mere cinematic success to become a profound cultural touchstone. Even today, it is lauded as one of Hindi cinema’s most enduring and beloved coming-of-age narratives. The 1992 film boasted a stellar ensemble cast, with the exceptionally talented Aamir Khan leading the charge, supported by the notable performances of Deepak Tijori, Pooja Bedi, Mamik Singh, and Ayesha Jhulka.

For years, whispers and rumours circulated within Bollywood circles, hinting at a potential romantic connection between Aamir Khan and Pooja Bedi during the production of ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.’ These speculative tales have persisted through the decades, finally prompting Pooja Bedi to address them directly. When confronted with the question of whether there was any truth to these long-standing rumours, she responded with a hearty laugh during a conversation with Vickey Lalwani, exclaiming, “You got to be kidding me.” Her unequivocal denial dispelled the notion of any romantic entanglement between the two actors during that period.

During the same illuminating interaction, Pooja Bedi also delved into a particularly memorable incident that occurred on the set of ‘Aatank Hi Aatank,’ a film in which she made a special cameo appearance. She revealed a fascinating anecdote about a scene she filmed with Aamir Khan, which involved what she described as “passionate love making.” Interestingly, this intensely intimate sequence was ultimately edited out of the film’s final cut, never to be seen by audiences.

Recalling the specifics of that memorable shoot, Pooja painted a vivid picture: “We were shooting near Film City, in some bungalow. So nowadays everyone goes into makeup vans, and no one went back to their vanity vans back then after a shot got finished. So the studio is a big villa, and then as soon as the shot was over, they put us into this room.” She elaborated on the immediate aftermath of filming the intense scene, describing how she found herself in a room with Aamir, a bed prominently situated nearby. The situation, she admitted, sparked a whirlwind of thoughts and uncertainties in her mind. “So now I’m sitting in the room, and Aamir is sitting in the room, and there’s a bed there. And I’m thinking to myself, a million thoughts are going through your head, right? So, as a young actress, like, is this part of that thing they talk about in Bollywood? And, you know, what should I be expecting? And you’re getting a little confused and fearful.” This candid recollection offers a rare glimpse into the vulnerabilities and anxieties faced by young actors navigating the complex landscape of the film industry.

However, the palpable tension and awkward silence in the room were unexpectedly shattered by Aamir Khan’s thoughtful intervention. Pooja recounted, “And Aamir’s sitting there in silence. I’m also sitting there in silence. And they, when did they shut the door? And Aamir’s looking at me, I’m looking at Aamir, and he looks at me and says, ‘Want to play chess?’” This simple yet profound question immediately diffused the discomfort. The actress explained that Aamir’s suggestion was particularly effective in easing her nerves because playing chess was a common and enjoyable pastime for them. “So I said, ‘Oh, I’d love to play chess,’ because he and I used to play a lot of chess. So I said, ‘Chess set leke aao.’ And he got the chess set and put it outside.” This small act of normalcy and camaraderie profoundly impacted Pooja.

Reflecting on the entire encounter, Pooja Bedi expressed immense relief and spoke highly of Aamir Khan’s character and professionalism. “Sigh of breath, you know, sigh of relief, you know, that he was a decent guy. He was a good man. He was not one of those dirty co-stars.” Her words underscore the positive impression Aamir left on her, portraying him as a respectful and considerate colleague, particularly in a potentially sensitive situation.
