The much-anticipated partition drama, “Batwara 1947,” featuring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, premiered in theaters on Friday, generating a varied reception from both audiences and critics. Despite the mixed reviews, Sunny Deol’s individual performance garnered significant praise from viewers. The film, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, managed to secure a respectable opening at the box office on its inaugural day.
Initial reports from Sacnilk indicate that “Batwara 1947” amassed an approximate 5.75 crore rupees across 8,721 shows throughout India on its first day. This figure contributes to a total India net collection of 5.75 crore rupees, with the total India gross collection reaching 6.84 crore rupees. Beyond domestic shores, the movie recorded a gross collection of 1.50 crore rupees from overseas markets on Day 1, elevating its global gross collection to an impressive 8.34 crore rupees. The overall occupancy for the film on its opening day stood at 15.42%, with evening and night screenings demonstrating the highest attendance.
“Batwara 1947” faced stiff competition at the box office, particularly from “Awarapan 2,” Emraan Hashmi’s romantic drama. “Awarapan 2” had already established a lead with substantial advance bookings, ultimately outperforming “Batwara 1947” on opening day by earning a net 21 crore rupees. Adding to the competitive landscape, the Rajkumar Santoshi directorial also contended with the ongoing success of the blockbuster Hollywood film, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” starring Tom Holland, which had been released in India on July 30.
The narrative of “Batwara 1947” is inspired by Asghar Wajahat’s renowned play, ‘Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai’. This film marks a significant return for Preity Zinta to the silver screen after an eight-year hiatus. In addition to the lead actors, the cast includes acclaimed performers such as Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, Kanikka Kapur, and Isha Sandhir. The movie officially launched in cinemas on August 14, 2026.
