Suriya and Mamitha Baiju’s latest cinematic collaboration, ‘Vishwanath and Sons’, directed by Venky Atluri, has experienced a remarkable debut at the global box office. On its opening day, the film achieved a worldwide gross of 27.51 crore rupees. Domestically, the movie garnered a net collection of 15.15 crore rupees, as reported by Sacnilk. This strong performance follows Suriya’s previous venture, ‘Karuppu’, marking a shift towards a more family-oriented subject for the acclaimed actor.

Breaking down the impressive figures further, the India net collection of 15.15 crore rupees contributed to a domestic gross of 17.51 crore rupees. An additional 10.00 crore rupees flowed in from overseas markets, solidifying the film’s global presence and pushing its worldwide gross to the aforementioned 27.51 crore rupees. The film was widely released across India, boasting 5,034 shows and registering an overall occupancy rate of 42.2% on its inaugural day.

The two primary language versions of the film demonstrated significant contributions to the overall success. The Tamil version accounted for 9.15 crore rupees of the India net collection, while the Telugu version added another 6.00 crore rupees.

Analyzing the occupancy rates, the Tamil version of ‘Vishwanath and Sons’ recorded an overall occupancy of 41.38% on its opening day. This included 29.85% for morning shows, 33.54% for afternoon shows, 36.38% for evening shows, and a strong 62.69% for night shows, indicating growing interest throughout the day. The Telugu version, however, slightly surpassed this, achieving a 52.35% overall occupancy. Its morning shows registered 33.00%, afternoon shows 46.33%, evening shows 44.42%, and night shows peaked at 67.33%. Furthermore, premium Telugu formats like HDR by Bar and EPIQ screenings saw exceptional occupancy rates of 98.50% and 96.33% respectively, highlighting a keen audience demand for enhanced viewing experiences.

Geographically, Tamil Nadu emerged as the leading contributor to the film’s domestic gross collection, bringing in 7.25 crore rupees on Day 1. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana collectively added 6.75 crore rupees, while Karnataka and Kerala contributed 1.80 crore rupees and 1.50 crore rupees respectively. The rest of India accounted for 21 lakhs, culminating in a total state-wise gross of 17.51 crore rupees.

The narrative of ‘Vishwanath and Sons’ centers on the intertwined lives of a business tycoon and an Olympian, whose paths converge through their surrogate child. The plot delves into the complexities of their burgeoning relationship, questioning whether a marital bond can blossom despite initial reservations and a noticeable age difference. ETimes’ review praised the film’s ending, noting its intelligent approach to sensitive themes. The review stated, “The film chooses to refer to this aspect as “Santa Claus”, but the idea leaves behind a whiff of a platonic sugar-daddy dynamic, something the film had worked hard to avoid until then. But to Venky Atluri’s credit, the ending is sensible; it avoids being either a problematic message or an easy cop-out. It’s smart and satisfying.” This positive critical reception, coupled with the impressive box office performance, suggests a promising run for ‘Vishwanath and Sons’ in the coming days.
