Wholesale inflation eases to 9.8% in July

The latest official figures indicate a slight moderation in India’s wholesale price index (WPI)-based factory gate inflation during July, settling at 9.8%. This represents a marginal decrease from the 27-month peak of 9.9% recorded in June, largely attributable to a notable dip in energy costs. For context, the WPI had actually contracted by 0.8% in July of the previous year, highlighting a significant shift in the economic landscape.

Despite this slight easing, it’s crucial to recognize that wholesale inflation has now persistently remained above the 9% mark for three consecutive months. This sustained upward pressure is primarily fueled by accelerated price increases across both manufactured goods and essential primary articles. While the overall inflation figure saw a minor decrease, the underlying components reveal areas of continued concern. A key factor in preventing an even higher inflation rate was the deceleration in the fuel and power segment. Specifically, crude oil prices experienced a substantial slowdown, with their growth rate easing to 27%, and mineral oil prices followed suit, decelerating to 32.4%. This combined effect significantly softened the overall inflation within the fuel and power category, which registered a 20% increase in July, a notable improvement from the 27.4% rise observed in June. The ongoing performance of India’s business sector will be closely scrutinized to understand the long-term trajectory of these inflationary pressures and their broader economic implications.
