During his address on India’s 80th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the critical importance of energy security, asserting that governmental initiatives have successfully prevented shortages of gas, fuel, and urea nationwide. This declaration gained additional relevance amidst escalating tensions in the US-Iran conflict, which threatened to disrupt vital energy transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Prime Minister emphasized how the administration has ensured the availability of essential resources. For instance, urea, which might cost 3,000 rupees if imported, is supplied to farmers at a subsidized rate of 300 rupees. A significant achievement highlighted was the dramatic expansion of the piped natural gas infrastructure. Modi noted that while this facility reached only 70 cities merely 12 years ago, it now encompasses 700 urban centers, providing connections to 1.75 crore households across the country.
Looking ahead, Modi articulated a long-term national strategy for energy, positioning it as a top priority. He outlined an ambitious target of achieving 100 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2047, with plans to initiate construction on five new nuclear reactors within the current decade. He reiterated this vision during his speech from the Red Fort after unfurling the Tricolour, emphasizing nuclear energy’s pivotal role in bolstering the nation’s energy independence.
Earlier this year, a significant stride towards nuclear self-reliance was made when the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, achieved criticality. This milestone reinforces the nation’s commitment to developing its nuclear capabilities. Reflecting on these advancements, the Prime Minister stated, “Energy security is today’s need, and that’s why we have already taken steps in this direction. We have passed the SHANTI Act in Parliament and set a target of achieving 100 GW nuclear power by 2047.”
In his address, Prime Minister Modi provided specific figures to illustrate the rapid progress in gas distribution, stating, “12 years ago, piped gasline was available in only 70 cities. In the last 12 years, this number has grown to 700 cities. Today, 1.75 crore households are connected to piped gas lines in the country.” He further elaborated on the nation’s strategic energy objectives: “Energy security is the demand of the time. We are moving forward with the aim of 100 gigawatts of nuclear power by 2047. We aim to start five new nuclear reactors in this decade.” These efforts collectively aim to secure India’s business and energy future.
