‘Those two steps were my blessing’: Seenu Ramasamy recalls Mammootty’s heartwarming gesture

A recent incident involving Malayalam superstar Mammootty in Karaikudi has stirred a cherished memory for acclaimed filmmaker Seenu Ramasamy. This recent event saw Mammootty warmly interacting with a fan who had gone to great lengths to assist the actor after he found himself disoriented while returning from a film shoot. The heartwarming display of gratitude and approachability from Mammootty resonated deeply with Seenu Ramasamy, reminding him of a particularly poignant and meaningful encounter he once shared with the veteran actor.

Seenu Ramasamy vividly recounted his initial meeting with Mammootty on his X page, detailing how his friend, fellow filmmaker Ram, facilitated the opportunity to narrate the story of his film, ‘Maamanithan,’ to the superstar. Despite Mammootty observing a fast at the time, he listened intently and patiently to the entire narrative, seated comfortably throughout. Although the film, ‘Maamanithan,’ ultimately featured Vijay Sethupathi and Gayathrie and was directed by Seenu Ramasamy, the memory of that meeting with Mammootty remained indelible for the director.

Some time later, Seenu Ramasamy happened to spot Mammootty at a wedding celebration in Kerala. Due to the significant crowd, he was unable to get close to the actor. As Mammootty passed by, Seenu Ramasamy offered a simple, respectful greeting, “Vanakkam sir.” What transpired next became an unforgettable moment for the filmmaker. Upon hearing the greeting, Mammootty paused, took two steps back, and warmly clasped Seenu Ramasamy’s hands with a smile before continuing on his way. This small yet profound gesture deeply moved the director. Reflecting on the incident, Seenu Ramasamy emphasized the immense significance of those two steps, revealing that he even confided in his assistant, stating, “These two steps are the blessing I have received in cinema.” For Seenu Ramasamy, this moment transcended a mere brief encounter; it symbolized a powerful act of recognition and respect from an actor he held in high esteem, a true blessing in his journey as a filmmaker.

The recent incident in Karaikudi echoes a similar display of genuine warmth and humility. Following a film shoot, Mammootty reportedly became lost on his return journey. A local man named Pandian, demonstrating remarkable kindness, rode approximately 10 kilometers on his motorcycle late at night to guide the actor back to his destination. Mammootty subsequently expressed his sincere gratitude to Pandian, a gesture that once again underscored the actor’s inherent connection and appreciation for the people around him. Seenu Ramasamy’s recollection emerges at a time when Mammootty’s humility and down-to-earth nature are being widely acknowledged and celebrated.
