Manav Suthar Shines in Galle, Out-Turning Senior Spinners with Dominant Performance

Galle, Sri Lanka – Young left-arm orthodox spinner Manav Suthar has emerged as a significant talent for India, delivering a standout performance in the opening Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium. The 24-year-old showcased his potential by claiming four crucial wickets in Sri Lanka’s first innings, playing a pivotal role in restricting the hosts to 284 runs after India had posted a formidable 462.

Suthar finished with impressive figures of 4/76, but it was his mastery of turn that truly caught the eye. Data from the match reveals that a remarkable 74% of his deliveries achieved a turn of more than 4.5 degrees. This exceptional percentage placed him at the top among all spinners in the match, surpassing even seasoned international players like Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.

In comparison, Sri Lanka’s Keshara Nuwantha managed 60.4% big-turn deliveries, while India’s star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja recorded 58.2%. Fellow Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav achieved 50%, followed by Sri Lankan bowlers Sonal Dinusha (33.3%), Prabath Jayasuriya (22.2%), and Dhananjaya de Silva (12.5%). Suthar’s ability to consistently extract such significant turn highlights his unique skill set and potential for long-term success.

Suthar attributed his impactful performance to a rigorous 10-day training stint at the BCCI Centre of Excellence prior to the series. During this period, he focused on simulating match conditions, practicing with Kookaburra balls in an open area designed to mimic the swirling winds of Galle. His coaches also fine-tuned his approach to the crease, ensuring he was fully prepared for the challenges of Sri Lankan pitches.

"I was practicing with the Kookaburra ball after the Afghanistan Test," Suthar explained in the post-day press conference. "So, my plan was pretty simple to bowl in good areas, right length, right speed as the wicket here offers some bounce too which makes it mandatory to bowl at the right line."

He emphasized the importance of patience and consistency for the Indian bowlers. "Our main focus was to get wickets in the first session. We didn’t get wickets in the second session but we got results in the third session. So, our focus was to keep bowling consistently in good areas." Suthar also revealed that the team adapted their strategies against resilient Sri Lankan batters like Dinusha and Dickwella, focusing on stump-to-stump lines and varying pace to create opportunities.

Sharing the bowling attack with the experienced Ravindra Jadeja, who reached the milestone of 350 Test wickets in the innings, was an invaluable learning experience for Suthar. "There are a lot of things that I can learn from him. He uses the (bowling) crease so well. His consistency while bowling at stumps is world class. So I would like to learn from him that no matter what the batsman is doing, how long can I bowl on the stump? Can you get a false shot? So there’s a lot to learn from him," Suthar remarked, highlighting Jadeja’s mastery of line and length.

Suthar also closely observed the Sri Lankan spinners, noting their ability to vary pace. "They bowled well yesterday. They varied their pace and I feel that on this wicket, the more consistent you are, the more purchase you get. So that’s what we were trying to do," he added.

His sensational debut in the match was underscored by dismissing veteran Dinesh Chandimal with his very first delivery. This early wicket provided an immense boost of confidence, helping him settle into the rhythm of Test cricket. "It’s a very good feeling to get a wicket on the first ball. It gives you lots of confidence throughout the game," Suthar stated, drawing parallels to his recent experience playing County cricket for Warwickshire.

Manav Suthar’s impressive display in Galle, particularly his remarkable ability to generate significant turn, signals a bright future for the young spinner and offers India another potent option in their left-arm spin arsenal. His performance, honed by dedicated training and a keen observation of seasoned players, is a strong indication of his growing stature in Indian cricket.
