Kilkeel, Northern Ireland – For Naomi Herron, the simple joy of a day at the beach remained a distant childhood memory for decades. Living with cerebral palsy presented significant barriers, making coastal access virtually impossible as she grew up. However, thanks to her unwavering determination and a powerful collaboration with a local charity, the 35-year-old has not only rediscovered the therapeutic embrace of the ocean but has also spearheaded a movement to ensure others with disabilities can share in that profound experience.
Naomi’s transformative journey back to the shoreline began just five years ago, following a passionate campaign with the Mae Murray Foundation. This dedicated organization is committed to dismantling physical barriers that prevent individuals with disabilities from participating in activities like water sports. Their partnership has not only reshaped Naomi’s life but has also created a wave of accessibility across Northern Ireland’s picturesque coastline.
Today, Naomi is a regular participant in supported swimming and, perhaps most notably, inclusive paddleboarding. The adapted paddleboards, designed with specialized sit-down mechanisms, allow individuals of all physical abilities to glide across the water alongside their friends and family. These innovative boards feature secure, bolted-on seating, ranging from high-performance sliding bucket seats to comfortable foam or beanbag options. Even the paddles are thoughtfully designed with enhanced grips to ensure maximum participation and enjoyment.
"Being in the water makes me feel on top of the world," Naomi exclaims, her voice beaming with newfound freedom. Recalling her first experience on an adapted board, she adds, "I loved it because I felt like a fish in there and a wee mermaid."
