Supreme Court Orders Imran Khan’s Hospital Transfer Amid Health Concerns and Political Tensions

The ruling, delivered on Tuesday, addresses persistent concerns over Khan’s health and marks a crucial victory for the PTI, which has been advocating for specialized medical care for months.
The three-member bench’s decision mandates Khan’s relocation within two days and stipulates that he remain hospitalized until at least September 16, when the next hearing is scheduled. This period will represent the longest time Khan has spent outside prison premises since his incarceration in August 2023 following convictions in a series of corruption-related cases, which he and his party vehemently maintain are politically motivated.
Uzair Bhandari, one of Khan’s legal representatives, confirmed to Al Jazeera that the court has also mandated the formation of an independent medical board to oversee Khan’s treatment. This board will include his sister, Dr. Uzma Khan, and his personal physician, Dr. Faisal Sultan, ensuring a level of oversight and trust long demanded by the former premier’s camp. This report detailed an August 10 review by a cardiac board which highlighted fluctuating blood pressure and anxiety in the 73-year-old Khan, directly linking these issues to his restricted contact with family. During Tuesday’s proceedings, the court expressed serious concern over "gaps" in the report, emphasizing that Khan’s "pulse and heart condition were not normal" and that his vital organs "had started being affected."
This ruling stands in stark contrast to previous judicial decisions. Courts had twice rejected similar transfer requests since February, including a specific ruling by the Islamabad High Court that instead ordered a medical board’s assessment within the prison system.
Zulfi Bukhari, a senior PTI leader, lauded the Supreme Court’s decision, asserting that it vindicates the party’s consistent demands for independent and specialized treatment for Khan outside Adiala jail. "Medical care provided within the prison system is no substitute for a thorough evaluation by independent specialists of his choosing," Bukhari told Al Jazeera, reiterating the PTI’s longstanding calls for Khan’s transfer to Shifa International and access to his own medical professionals.
Government officials, however, have maintained a different stance. Rana Sanaullah, adviser to the prime minister, informed the Senate on Monday that Khan was receiving "the best available medical treatment" and that his condition did not warrant the level of concern expressed by the PTI. He also previously stressed that any transfer required judicial authorization, not executive discretion.
The court’s order injects a new dynamic into the ongoing political standoff surrounding Khan. The PTI has increasingly positioned access to their incarcerated leader as a prerequisite for engaging in meaningful dialogue with the government. While the government has signaled renewed efforts to initiate talks, these attempts have thus far proven fruitless. In a show of continued defiance, the PTI leadership has announced a nationwide protest on September 27.
