Tennis Star Nick Kyrgios Provisionally Suspended After Cocaine Positive

Mallorca, Spain – August 8, 2023 – Controversial Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from professional tennis after testing positive for cocaine. The 31-year-old, known for his fiery on-court demeanor and unpredictable talent, publicly admitted to the failed drug test via a statement on his social media channels, expressing deep regret and taking full responsibility for his actions.

The positive test stems from a sample provided at a lower-tier tournament in Mallorca, Spain, in June of this year. Kyrgios, who reached the Wimbledon final in 2022 before ultimately falling to Novak Djokovic, openly acknowledged the "huge mistake" on his Instagram. "I recently failed a drug test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine," he wrote, citing the tournament in June. "I made a huge mistake and take full responsibility for it."

Cocaine is listed as a prohibited substance under the World Anti-Doping Code. While penalties can vary, especially if usage occurs outside of competition, a positive test during a competition typically carries significant sanctions.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed that Kyrgios provided the sample on June 22nd. The positive result was then confirmed on July 17th, notably after Kyrgios had already participated in Wimbledon, where he made a return to the doubles circuit. A mandatory provisional suspension was subsequently imposed on August 4th. Kyrgios has not contested this suspension, and the ITIA will now proceed with handling the case.

This latest development casts a long shadow over Kyrgios’s career, which has been increasingly plagued by injuries and personal struggles. The Australian has openly spoken about the mental and emotional toll these challenges have taken, particularly as recurrent injuries have seen his world ranking plummet to 919th after two years of persistent problems.

"At times I’ve felt helpless and alone," Kyrgios confessed in his statement, acknowledging that these struggles do not excuse his actions. His return to Wimbledon last month, playing doubles alongside Alexander Bublik after receiving a wildcard, was a brief flicker of hope, but the pair were eliminated in the first round.

The tennis world now awaits the ITIA’s final ruling, which will determine the extent of Kyrgios’s ban and the future trajectory of a career marked by both brilliant highs and profound challenges.
