Production Halt Rocks Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Police Company’ Over Unpaid Dues

Mumbai, India – The commencement of acclaimed director Ram Gopal Varma‘s latest film, ‘Police Company,’ was abruptly halted on its very first day of shooting, Monday, due to a long-standing financial dispute involving the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE). The interruption, which lasted nearly two hours, stemmed from outstanding payments owed to technicians and workers from Varma’s 2018 Telugu movie, ‘Officer.’

Representatives from FWICE arrived on the sets of ‘Police Company,’ demanding that the previous financial obligations be settled before filming could proceed. The federation’s intervention led to a temporary suspension of production, highlighting persistent issues within the industry regarding timely payments for crew members.

The Genesis of the Dispute: Unpaid Dues from ‘Officer’

The core of the dispute revolves around a substantial amount, reportedly exceeding Rs 1 crore, owed to various technicians and workers who contributed to ‘Officer.’ The 2018 action film, starring Nagarjuna and directed by Varma, had, according to reports from Bollywood Hungama, left a trail of unpaid dues that remained unresolved for several years. FWICE had been actively pursuing this matter with the filmmaker since 2017, without success.

"RGV owed over Rs. 1 crore to technicians and workers who worked on his Nagarjuna-starrer 2018 Telugu action film Officer," a report by Bollywood Hungama detailed. "FWICE has been pursuing the matter with the filmmaker since 2017, yet the dues remained unpaid. When Varma started shooting for his new film on Monday, representatives of FWICE arrived on the sets, suspended the shoot, and insisted that the long-pending amounts be settled before production could continue."

FWICE’s Timely Intervention and Resolution

Upon learning of ‘Police Company’s’ impending production, FWICE reportedly contacted the film’s producers, Bhushan Kumar and Parag Sanghvi, to address the outstanding dues. While an agreement to settle the amount, reportedly totaling Rs 1.32 crore, was reached, the payment had not been processed before the scheduled start of filming. This oversight prompted the federation’s direct intervention on set.

The situation was swiftly resolved within a few hours. Once the financial obligations were reportedly cleared, the crew of ‘Police Company’ resumed work. While the production lost approximately two hours of shooting time, the brief halt did not result in a major delay to the overall production schedule. This development marks a significant step towards resolving a long-running dispute that had plagued the workers involved in ‘Officer.’

‘Police Company’ Moves Forward with an All-Star Cast

With the financial hurdle cleared, ‘Police Company’ is now expected to proceed as planned. The action thriller, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, features a prominent cast including Harshvardhan Rane in the lead role, alongside Fardeen Khan, Saurabh Shukla, Paresh Rawal, and Makarand Deshpande. The makers are reportedly aiming for completion of the shoot by the end of 2026.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by industry bodies like FWICE to safeguard the interests of daily wage earners and ensure timely and fair compensation for their invaluable contributions to the cinematic landscape. The swift resolution in this case offers a glimmer of hope for a more transparent and accountable production environment.
