IndiGo Faces Widespread Disruptions as Core Reservation Platform Experiences Intermittent Issues

NEW DELHI – August 19 (Reuters) – India’s largest airline, IndiGo, announced on Wednesday that its core reservation platform is experiencing intermittent technical issues, leading to widespread problems for customers attempting to book tickets and complete online check-ins. The disruption has affected numerous passengers and raised concerns across the Indian aviation sector.

IndiGo, which commands a dominant position with over 65% of India’s domestic aviation market, confirmed the outage in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The airline stated that its teams are actively collaborating with a partner to resolve the technical difficulties "as soon as possible." However, IndiGo has not yet disclosed the identity of the partner or the underlying cause of the disruption, leaving many unanswered questions about the incident’s specifics.

The impact of the technical glitch was immediately evident. Reuters journalists in at least three major Indian cities reported being unable to book tickets via the official IndiGo website. Attempts to search for flights consistently resulted in a "no data available" message. Furthermore, when Reuters tried to book a ticket through another prominent travel booking website, a pop-up message appeared, stating, "the airline systems are currently experiencing a technical problem. Please try again in a short while."

Social media platforms, particularly X, quickly became a hub for customer complaints. Numerous users voiced their frustration, highlighting their inability to book flights or complete essential online check-ins. One particularly aggrieved user detailed their struggle to perform a web check-in since Wednesday morning, encountering issues on both the IndiGo website and its mobile application. This user further reported that even a customer care executive was unable to assist, attributing the problem to apparent server issues.

In response to the escalating situation, IndiGo issued guidance to its affected passengers. Customers requiring immediate travel assistance were advised to contact the airline’s call centre. For those with later travel plans, the airline suggested attempting to access the website or app again after a short interval, hoping for a resolution.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the incident.

This latest technical setback comes just months after IndiGo faced intense scrutiny in December due to severe operational disruptions. Poor pilot roster planning at the time led to the cancellation of approximately 4,500 flights, stranding tens of thousands of passengers and causing significant travel chaos across India. That event was widely regarded as the worst aviation crisis in the country in several years. The current technical issues with the reservation platform further compound concerns about the airline’s operational resilience and its ability to manage critical IT infrastructure.

The ongoing technical problem is a critical concern for IndiGo, especially given its market dominance. Reliable online reservation and check-in systems are paramount for modern airlines, and prolonged outages can severely impact customer trust and operational efficiency. As the airline works to rectify the situation, passengers and industry observers will be closely watching for a swift resolution and a clearer explanation of the cause of this significant disruption.
