Manav Suthar creates history: Youngest Indian to take 10-wicket haul in away Test | Cricket News

Manav Suthar Etches Name in History Books with Record-Breaking 10-Wicket Haul in Galle

Galle, Sri Lanka – Young Indian spinner Manav Suthar has written himself into the record books, becoming the youngest Indian to claim a ten-wicket haul in an away Test match. His sensational performance was instrumental in securing India’s comprehensive victory over Sri Lanka in Galle, giving the visitors a crucial 1-0 lead in the two-match series.

At just 24 years and 16 days old, Suthar’s match figures of 10/131 (4/76 in the first innings and an exceptional 6/55 in the second) not only sealed the win but also placed him in an elite cohort of Indian bowlers. He is now only the seventh Indian spinner to achieve a ten-wicket match haul in an away Test, joining legendary figures like Ravichandran Ashwin, Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Anil Kumble, and Harbhajan Singh.

What makes Suthar’s achievement even more remarkable is his age. He is the only Indian in this distinguished group to accomplish the feat before turning 28, highlighting his immense potential and early impact on the international stage.

A Cascade of Records and Elite Company

Suthar’s dominant display also saw him secure multiple five-wicket hauls within his first two Test matches. With two such hauls to his name, he now stands alongside illustrious Indian bowlers like Narendra Hirwani (three), Axar Patel (three), Laxman Sivaramakrishnan (two), and Mohammad Nissar (two).

Furthermore, Suthar is only the fourth Indian bowler to claim a maiden ten-wicket match haul within his first two Tests. This exclusive list includes Narendra Hirwani, who still holds the record for the quickest, with a staggering 16 wickets on debut against the West Indies in Chennai in 1988, as well as Laxman Sivaramakrishnan and Axar Patel.

His performance was particularly noteworthy given that he was the least experienced of India’s three left-arm spinners in the squad. Despite this, Suthar comfortably overshadowed his more seasoned teammates, emerging as the primary architect of India’s victory.

This historic spell also adds to a significant legacy in India-Sri Lanka Test encounters. Suthar is now only the fourth Indian to achieve a ten-wicket haul against Sri Lanka, following in the footsteps of Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Intriguingly, three of the eight ten-wicket hauls recorded by Indians against Sri Lanka have now come at the scenic Galle International Stadium.

Captain Gill Hails "Very Promising" Suthar

The resounding victory earned India 12 vital World Test Championship points and was particularly significant as it marked India’s 600th Test match.

Indian captain Shubman Gill was effusive in his praise for the young spinner after his match-winning heroics. "He’s been bowling magnificently, even in the first match that he played in India [vs Afghanistan], and in this match. He looks like a very promising guy and someone who can play for India for a very long time," Gill commented, acknowledging Suthar’s consistent form and future prospects.

The Indian dressing room was filled with joyous celebrations, reflecting the profound impact of Suthar’s contribution. Players were seen exchanging fist-bumps and hugs, with the coveted match ball becoming a focal point of attention. Suthar was later congratulated by teammates including Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mohammed Siraj before proudly collecting the match ball and raising it towards the cameras.

Beyond Suthar’s heroics, India also saw another positive in Devdutt Padikkal, who made an assured return to Test cricket, batting almost flawlessly in both innings. While Sri Lanka suffered a defeat, they too had bright spots, with 25-year-olds Keshara Nuwantha and Sonal Dinusha impressing. Nuwantha, the off-spinner, bowled with spirit after a challenging opening day, while Dinusha emerged as Sri Lanka’s best batter across both innings.

Sri Lanka’s quest for a Test victory over India now extends to 11 matches, including nine defeats. The series now moves to Colombo, where the second and final Test is scheduled to begin on August 23rd. All eyes will undoubtedly be on Manav Suthar as he looks to continue his sensational form.
