Subnautica 2’s "Buddy System" Update Dives Deep with Community-Requested Features

Unknown Worlds Entertainment has unleashed the latest Early Access update for Subnautica 2, dubbed "Buddy System," introducing a wave of highly anticipated features and crucial bug fixes aimed at enhancing the co-operative underwater exploration experience. The update, now live, is a direct response to player feedback, integrating elements like proximity chat, player revives, and streamlined trading into the perilous yet captivating alien ocean.

Headlining the update is the much-requested Cross-Platform Proximity Voice Chat. Players can now communicate more organically, with voices fading in and out as distance between divers increases. This feature offers "always on," "push to talk," and "always off" options, catering to various player preferences and adding a new layer of immersion and strategic communication to multiplayer sessions.

Beyond voice communication, the "Buddy System" significantly expands player interaction. A new Player Revive mechanic allows divers to bring incapacitated teammates back from the brink, preserving their equipment and granting a small oxygen boost. For those who prefer a quicker return to action, downed players can still choose to respawn at their assigned Biobed. Further solidifying social interactions, players can now directly exchange inventory items with each other, eliminating the need for convoluted workarounds and fostering a true sense of cooperation. To add a touch of personality to these interactions, a range of new emotes – Wave, Clap, Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down, and Frustrated – have been introduced via a radial menu.

The update also brings fresh faces to the character customization screen with the addition of Jegna and Grace character options, alongside two new color schemes. These additions provide more ways for players to personalize their deep-sea explorers.

Several quality-of-life improvements have been implemented across various aspects of the game. Gameplay enhancements include a new Tracking Tag for short-range beacon functionality and extended Black Box range when carried. Interaction prompts on Upgrade Biobeds have been clarified, and distinct beeps and screen flashes now indicate player upgrade spots.

The mysterious alien fauna and flora of Subnautica 2 have also received attention. Creatures like the Marrowbreach, Hammerhead, and Nibbler now boast more dynamic flinch animations and visual effects, making encounters feel more impactful. Bulletheads have been rebalanced to deal more damage but can now be dodged, adding a layer of skill to their encounters. Visual refinements extend to Coral Crabs, Bloom Parasites, and Jelly Ring tentacles, further enriching the underwater ecosystem.

Base building, a core element of Subnautica, sees significant improvements. The placement UI now features alignment guide lines, making construction more precise and intuitive. The trashcan is now fully functional, offering a delayed item destruction mechanism. Numerous fixes address issues related to base construction and interaction, including preventing bases from being built in restricted areas and improving how the game handles "Move" mode in multiplayer.

Vehicles, Tools & Equipment have also been fine-tuned. The Feedback Resonator now stuns creatures instead of simply causing them to flee, and its stun duration has been extended to 10 seconds. Repair Tool unlock progression has been adjusted, and sources for Acid now appear as green dots on the Scanner HUD.

Beyond these major additions, the "Buddy System" update delivers a comprehensive list of bug fixes and optimizations, demonstrating Unknown Worlds’ commitment to refining the Early Access experience. These include numerous terrain and visual fixes, improved UI clarity, narrative consistency adjustments, and performance enhancements, particularly for Nvidia RTX 5000 series users with new Frame Generation modes.

Players eager to dive into these new features can expect the update to download automatically via Steam. For those encountering issues, a dedicated support team is available. Unknown Worlds encourages players to continue submitting ideas and reporting bugs through their Nolt.io page and in-game reporting tool, fostering a collaborative development environment.
