Manav Suthar’s Dream Debut Seals Historic Indian Victory in Galle Test

Galle, Sri Lanka – In a dramatic climax at the Galle International Cricket Stadium, debutant left-arm spinner Manav Suthar delivered a sensational performance, bowling India to a commanding 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test. The win, secured just moments before heavy rain lashed the venue, was a historic one for India, marking their 600th Test match with an emphatic triumph.

Suthar, making his Test debut, showcased remarkable composure and skill, particularly in tearing through Sri Lanka’s lower order. His late burst in the final innings proved decisive, earning him incredible figures of 6-55 from 23.4 overs. This included a pivotal three-wicket maiden in the 76th over, where he dismissed the resolute Sonal Dinusha (84), who had been anchoring the Sri Lankan innings, followed by Prabhat Jayasuriya for a duck. Though a hat-trick eluded him, Suthar swiftly completed his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket by having Lahiru Kumara caught behind.

His extraordinary match figures of 10/131 across 45.2 overs, built on a strong 4-76 in the first innings, cemented his status as the undisputed architect of India’s victory. Chasing an improbable 372 for victory, Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 206 in 77.4 overs.

This crucial win also significantly boosts India’s ambitions in the 2027 World Test Championship. They maintain their fifth position in the standings but have now improved their points percentage to 53.33. Sri Lanka, conversely, remain sixth with 33.33%. While Australia currently leads the table, followed by South Africa, India’s performance in Galle ensures they are firmly in contention. With one match remaining in the series, Sri Lanka can no longer claim a series victory but will undoubtedly be aiming to deny India a clean sweep in the second Test, scheduled to begin this Sunday.

The final day of the Test began with Sri Lanka at a precarious 84-4, chasing what would have been the highest successful fourth-innings total at the Galle venue. While Suthar undoubtedly stole the show, pace bowler Prasidh Krishna also played a significant role, contributing a fiery spell that yielded 2-16 from 10 overs.

Krishna’s second wicket was particularly noteworthy, following an intriguing exchange with Sri Lankan batsman Niroshan Dickwella. Amidst constant banter from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who challenged Dickwella to play the hook shot and playfully offered to recommend him to his IPL coach Kumar Sangakkara, Dickwella appeared momentarily distracted. Attempting an ambitious stroke after backing away from the stumps, the left-hander top-edged to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and departed for 10.

Meanwhile, fellow spinner Kuldeep Yadav had an uncharacteristically quiet outing, returning figures of 1/38 from 11 overs. This performance could potentially open up discussions for the Indian team management regarding giving rookie off-spinner Saransh Jain an opportunity in the upcoming Colombo Test.

Manav Suthar’s arrival in Test cricket has been nothing short of spectacular, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cricket history and setting a thrilling tone for the remainder of the series. His performance will be remembered as a landmark moment in India’s 600th Test, making him an instant hero.
